Peyton Lawson's Medical Saga

Donation protected
I have been friends with this precious family for 41 years. My part in Peyton's Saga is to tell her story and help her family with the medical expenses incurred from her illness and subsequent hospitalizations.

Michael and Dayna Lawson are school teachers, and they have one 8 yr. old daughter, Peyton.  As you will see when you read further, Peyton was hospitalized, released, and re-hospitalized a day later, which resulted in them having to meet double deductibles and co-pays.  Their insurance rolled over to a new year the day Peyton was hospitalized for the second time, and their portion of the hospital bill will be $30,000, or more. Hopefully, friends, family, and others will understand the burden of this debt, and will be willing to help this family! Any donation, big or small, will be appreciated!

Below are the details of Peyton's Saga:

Peyton was excited about starting 3rd grade, but two weeks before school started, she became very ill. She ran a high fever, had aching joints, and was lethargic and slept all day. During this two week period of time, she went to the doctor several times, with numerous tests performed, but the doctors could not find a cause for her illness.

On August 24th, after a spike in fever, Peyton was taken to St. Luke's Emergency Room in The Woodlands. An ultrasound was performed, and it was noted that her liver was enlarged, and as the technician scanned over her kidneys, a discovery and a diagnosis was made.

Peyton was diagnosed with a Renal Abscess on her left kidney, which is a very rare condition, especially in children. The abscess was the size of an egg! Because the abscess was so large and the condition was so rare, she was transferred via ambulance to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston where specialty doctors were available to treat her.

Upon arriving at Texas Children's Hospital, Peyton was evaluated by Urology, Pediatrics, Infectious Disease, and Interventional Radiology. Peyton then underwent a percutaneous drainage of the abscess, and two tubes were placed in her kidney to facilitate the drainage. She was also placed on IV antibiotics.

To everyone's delight, Peyton was released on August 30th, and was sent home with oral antibiotics. However, the next day, her fever spiked again. She was taken to Texas Children's Emergency Room, and was re-admitted to the hospital on September 1st.

At this time, an ultrasound was performed, and it was determined the abscess was still the villain in this saga! Again, Peyton was started on IV antibiotics, followed by numerous blood tests, etc. Several days later another ultrasound was performed, and it was determined the abscess was shrinking. On September 9th, Peyton had a PICC line installed, and she was discharged. She will undergo a two week course of IV antibiotics at home, followed by six weeks of oral antibiotics after the removal of the PICC line. It is anticipated that she will have multiple follow-up visits by each specialty doctor over the next several months to ensure the kidney, bladder, and liver are all functioning normally.

While the cause of Peyton's infection is unknown, one possible explanation is that it originated from a piece of glass she unknowingly stepped on, which resulted in a trip to the Emergency Room on June 20th. The doctors cut out the glass, but decided not to give her antibiotics as she is allergic to so many of them.  This was the beginning of Peyton's "not so fun" Saga!

So, Miss Peyton was supposed to start 3rd grade on August 24th, but was hospitalized until September 9th. She was determined to go to school the next day, so she started school on September 10th, with her IV line covered by a mesh sleeve, and restrictions for no P.E. or recess! Peyton's Saga continues, however, for an undetermined period of time, but with high hopes and constant prayers for a complete recovery.
