Mom's US travel for my graduation

Donación protegida
Hello everybody,

First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read this.

My name is Medina and I am originally from Ethiopia. I am currently a senior at St Olaf College and I will be graduating this May with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  As I am a first generation college student, acquiring this degree is a milestone and a dream come true.

My parents have been a source of inspiration to me throughout this journey. They picked me up high in tough times and they celebrated me in good times. So, their presence at my graduation mean a lot to them as much as it does to me. Unfortunately, my dad will not be here due to health issues, but my mom received her visa recently(!). It would be her first time to ever travel by airplane, let alone travel outside of Ethiopia. It would also be my first time seeing her in almost three years. That makes this whole trip even more special. Even though I work on campus, while balancing my school work, the expense for this trip is beyond my financial capabilities.

For this reasons, I am hoping to raise $1944 so that I can take my mom on a journey she will never forget, (the travel plan is described below).

I appreciate every bit of support from contributing to this campaign. Please feel free to share the link with your family and friends <3

Fun facts about me
- I was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I went to elementary and high school in Ethiopia and received a scholarship to attend a two years high school program at African Leadership Academy (ALA) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
- At ALA, I completed a diploma in Leadership, Entrepreneurship and African Studies.
- I took a gap year after ALA and interned at the Center for Creative Leadership where I managed the process of collecting oral stories and compiling them into a children’s book in three local languages to promote literacy. I coached a multi-faceted “Leadership Essentials” training program to more than 100 employers so as to develop leadership skills among employers in companies in Ethiopia. I also translated the Girls Club toolkit from English into Amharic for easy utilization by young girls.
- I received an international student grant to study at St.Olaf College in 2013.
- I have done a research at Stockholm University in the Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Science Department during the summer of 2016 and had the opportunities to travel to different places in Europe.
- I plan to pursue graduate studies in material science engineering after receiving my bachelor degree in chemistry from St.Olaf.

The Plan
