= The Backstory =
Daniel is a very handsome and active 6 years old boy from the Dominican Republic who has lived in Sydney for the last 3 years with his 8 years old sister and his parents Denisse and Franklin.
Last 28th August Daniel was taken to the A&E Department at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a strong headache and loss of stability. After an MRI the doctors found a clot/haemorrhage in his brain and Daniel had to be rushed into theatre for a live saving operation. Had he arrived to hospital 15 minutes later we would probably be telling a different story today.
Immediately after the operation Daniel was moved to the Randwick Children Hospital and kept in an induced coma for a couple of days until he stabilised and slowly started to gain consciousness. The doctors expected Daniel to be in intensive care and be fed by a nasal tube for at least 4 days. Thanks to God’s amazing grace Daniel started to recover faster than anybody expected, the tube was removed, and he was eating by himself after just one day! the doctors and nurses were very surprised…. God is at work in Daniel’s life!
After the operation a number of tests have been completed and samples have been sent to Germany for analysis. The prognosis provided is Medulloblastoma which is a cancerous tumour (also known as primitive neuroectodermal tumour - PNET) that starts in the region of the brain at the base of the skull. These tumours tend to spread to other parts of the brain and to the spinal cord. Thankfully in Daniel’s case the cancer hasn’t affected his spinal cord.
The doctors are still waiting the final results of the tests being done in Germany. In the meantime, they are organising 31 radio therapy sessions to commence on the 15-Oct-18.
= The Costs and How you can Help =
As Daniel and his family are in Australia on a work visa and are not permanent residents yet, they will need to cover all the medical expenses themselves, unfortunately their insurance has advised they won’t cover the bills.
Daniel’s family has agreed for their friends to start a fundraising to gather funds to help them pay the expenses incurred to date and the future expenses for Daniel’s treatment.
Daniel spent 2 and half days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 1 and a half week in the C2 South ward at the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, where he was transferred immediately after his brain surgery. This will cost around AU$20,000. Additionally, he has had 3 MRI’s (at an approximate cost of AU$ 550.00 each), more than 5 appointments with specialists (AU$ 150.00 each), medicines and tests.
Although all the bills have not arrived yet, we as their friends want to start planning and taking care of the finances as soon as possible so Daniel’s parents and sister can focus on supporting Daniel during his recovery and treatment that is expected to take a few weeks. We will update this webpage constantly as the bills start to arrive, so you are all aware how the resources you are providing are being used.
Our goal is to raise AU$ 50,000.00
We may think that the contribution of one person can’t do much, however, if we all join forces there won’t be such a thing as a “small amount”, working together we can demonstrate to Daniel and his family our love and appreciation and help them conquer in these challenging times.
Daniel is a strong and courageous boy that is fighting the good fight, we strongly believe that God is working a miraculous healing in his body that will impact and be a testimony to many.
