J. Courtney's Double Mastectomy

Our Mother's Journey:

A little over two years ago, our mother started feeling sick. She thought it was just the flu, but it never went away. She went to the doctor, and they ordered blood work to be done. The blood work came back with a high white cell count, low red cell count, and low iron. This caused her immune system to not fight like it should. She consistently had bronchitis or pneumonia. Getting out of bed was a difficulty. Her doctor sent her to every specialist possible. We watched her come home from each appointment looking tired and defeated even though she tried to remain positive. No one had a solution, and her hemoglobin and iron kept dropping steadily. Finally, her doctor decided to send her to yet another Hematologist. When she went to an appointment, she expected to hear what all the other doctors have said, "We do not know how to help you." This appointment was different. She was told they do not know what is causing the issue, but they can help her. The solution was a series of infusions that started immediately. It took time, but it has helped. Her goal at the end of 2016 was to be totally free of infusions. So far, her body is starting to fight on its own.

This brings us to why we are asking for help. At her last check up, her Hematologist, who is also an oncologist, told her she was healthy enough to go ahead with her double mastectomy surgery. You see, during all those tests she found out that she tested positive for the gene mutation for breast cancer. That means she has over 85% chance of getting breast cancer. After many deep conversations with family and closest friends, she has decided to go through with the double mastectomy. This will reduce her odds of breast cancer to less than 5%.

Our mom is without a doubt the most hard-working, and caring individual we know. She already has been through so much over the last few years, and we know making this decision was hard. She is an incredible mother, friend, sister, and daughter. She has always gone above and beyond to help others while sacrificing her health and wellness. We love her; she is the most thoughtful, hilarious, quirky, and fun loving person we know. This is why we want to help lift some of the financial burden off her shoulders. This surgery is not cheap whatsoever, and the recovery time is lengthy.

This is where you and the fund come into play. My sisters, brother, and I have decided to reach out to you, our loving supportive friends and family, asking for your support in anyway. Prayers and any donations are greatly appreciated.
