It's Our Home Housing Campaign

It’s Our Home is a 14 unit affordable rental housing project for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who are capable of independent living.  The project is a first of its kind in Canada and was conceived in the Spring of 2011 when a group of parents of children with ASD organized to address the pressing need that is seen in London for safe, appropriate and affordable rental housing for their adult children with ASD. In particular, while navigating the world of independent living, many were experiencing a significant lack of affordable housing and difficulty in finding the right type of apartments. Individuals were experiencing discrimination from landlords and other tenants and too frequently were forced to move or return to the parents’ home.  There is tremendous potential for individuals living with ASD to achieve success in all aspects of life.  As a result an Organizing Committee was formed and with the help of a Development Consultant and Architect began plans for a dedicated housing project.

In 2012 an appropriate infill site was identified at 193 Clarke Road in the City’s east end. A re-zoning of the property was required and after securing City Council approval. Prominent London Architect John Nicholson of Nicholson Sheffield Architects has designed an attractive one storey apartment building that will provide 14 one bedroom suites with two of the units designed for persons requiring handicapped accessibility.  All units will have patios as well as common areas and lounges for tenant use.

The project is expected to cost approximately $ 2.7 million. In June this year, the project was awarded $1.62 million from the Federal and Provincial governments under the Investment in Affordable Housing ( IAH ) Program and the City of London. The project can carry about $800,000 in mortgage financing and will be looking to the community to raise the remainder of the funds needed and to create a legacy fund to support on-going operations.  Under the 25 year IAH Agreement, rents are set at 70% and 80% of the CMHC Average Market Rent making the building affordable and accessible to the potential residents, many of whom will have limited incomes from part time employment or pensions.

Construction of the project is expected to begin in October, 2015 with completion and occupancy in the summer of 2016.
