Isis's Study Abroad Trip

Dear friends and family, fortunately I have been given the opportunity to travel abroad to Siena, Italy studying politics at the end of May. After traveling to Israel with the Elijah Cummings program after high school, I was able to realize the importance of travel and interacting with people from around the world. So much of what we see in the media is tailored to specific audiences and half of the real story. Not only will studying abroad enrich my understanding of different people and customs, it also will allow me to gain a broader context for understanding today’s most pressing global issues. Learning in an international environment will challenge my assumptions and introduce me to new ways of thinking about the world.
As many of you know I am currently majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in gender and women's studies, however politics does not fall under either of these things. Everyone says that college is a time to explore new things however I have taken classes, worked and/or participated in research during every break since starting at UMBC. As an engineering major I have not had the opportunity to study abroad for an entire semester, however studying abroad has always been a goal of mine. This class will not only give me the opportunity to try something new but experience different styles of education and grow personally, without detracting from my graduation date, as my class also counts as a GEP.
It is my hope, that with the help of friends and family this trip will be less of a financial burden on myself so that I may put all of my focus on learning, exploring, and absorbing as much as I can during my brief time abroad.
Every little bit counts and adds up quickly. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your willingness to contribute toward my education and making it possible for me to embrace the opportunity to draw new experiences and travel abroad.
