Irrawaddy Delta Primary School Fund

Donation protected
I am a Personal & Professional Development Strategist and have the following opportunity for people to fund the rebuilding of a school and provide high school level education in a poorer part of Myanmar, as yet, underdeveloped.

Project Summary

Hatin Kone Villager requests the amount of 9,139,700 in Myanmar Kyat (7,030 USD, $8,900 AUD) to buy the materials necessary to complete the construction of a new village school. The new school is replacing an old wooden school that was severely weakened as a result of Cyclone Nargis in 2008.

Project Background

The primary school are located in Irrawaddy Delta, Pantanaw Township in the mid part of Burma(Myanmar)  The old primary was founded by the villager and the local authorities since severals years ago. It is running by primary level range from grade 1 to grade 5 and 5 to 13 years age children’s There are around 120  homes and a population of over 1200 living in the village. The village is called Hatin Kone, and regional part of dstricts Ma Eu Pin, and there can be found 2 hours drive west from Yangon (the cipital of Myanmar) and 20 miles (32.18 kilometre) away. Everyone living  there are from the karen ethnic group and everyone in the village were buddhist and catholic religion. There used to be a monastery and an ordination hall in the village. Since when Cyclone Nargis, which struck and effect in the village in May 2008, destroyed businesses and crops in it’s path. Luckily no one does not missing and lost, only their planting was strongly effect by Cyclone Nargis. Since then the villagers have been great struggled to recover from the loss of their livelihoods and have become even more poor and poverty, besides the main occupation in the village is betel nut farming, it is a green planting around in the villages, it was also breakable farming  can being  planted by the weather and seasons, somes of the villagers working are informal workers earning a daily cash wage.  Thus the local community has been unable to afford to complete the rebuilding of school which was also severely damaged from so many years ago. They are taught by 4 teachers, the headmaster of the school is from the village.

Project Need

There are 120 children who study at the local primary school but the existing bulding is very old and almost at the point of collapse under the weight of  120  children. The villagers have contributed what they can to fund the construction of a new primary school but they can no longer raise enough money even to feed themselves everyday.  Years ago the villagers managed to build the foundations of the school but have since had to stop construction while they concentrate on struggling to survive from one day to the next. The villagers are looking for a donor or donors to support the completion of the school. Construction materials and funds to pay the laborers are still needed.

If the new school remains uncompleted the students will have to remain studying in the cramped conditions of the old school until its foundations or roof collapse. When that happens, if the village has not managed to complete the building of the new school, there will be no replacement school for the local children to attend and their education will be severely disrupted and potentially brought to a permanent premature end. The villagers and students would be relieved and thrilled to be able to open the new completed school as soon as possible.

Project Beneficiaries:

The team will create with parents and local community for the children to promote their education and opportunities to pursue the high school level and to have health care for the marginalized for them with their families living in the protection of an official village.

All children only could be provided text books, exercise books, and nutrition for lunch by their parent’s and provided Burmese curriculum as well as English language, Karen language, sport, and funfair as an extra curriculum. And also the gardening will be provided for older students and basic art of painting will be provided for all the children.

 Problem Statement

Since Cyclone Nargis hit the village in 2008, people in the village have been suffering very much to recover their agriculture farming.   Most of the farm owners could not work to plant their farm anymore, because they do not have much for the capital or investment to recover their farm, the majority of whom are in depth to a financier.   This has increased the problem for the students in the village because they could not go to school as they were overwhelmed by the need to survive and assist their parents to make a livelihood.   Children were required to obtain jobs that paid daily wages even though they were children.  Therefore, despite the parent’s willingness to sending their children to school even more poverty since at that time has made this impossible.  Unfortunately, there has never been a visit from a NGO in this area of Myanmar and the Western World has never been enlightened to what happened in this village since Cyclone Nargis attack the region in 2008.

A representative from Safe Migrant School has now met with the school principal Mr- Saw Tun Tun and some of school committee members who are also from the village, and the school principal said that it is very important for us to get a new school once as soon as possible.   They have been advised by their local authorities to get private funding as the local area cannot support them since most of the agriculture farming is fragile and they are not good economic farmers as yet.

As background, after Cyclone Nargis affected the Irrawaddy delta in 2008, most of the school were lost and many people around 140,000.00 - 200,000.00 were missing and dead, many have been homeless and jobless until now although there has been limited help and aid assistance.

Unfortunately, this part of the delta was part of the region that was not able to receive international aid even though Cyclone Nargis victims were facing breaking conditions and people are still really suffering very much every day and their life seems to be getting poorer.

Goals and Objectives

1. To provide high school level education to the children of the Irrawaddy Delta.

2. To promote healthy lives in a migrant population by giving health education.

3. To preserve and promote the culture heritage of the area

4. To provide food, boarding facilities and supervision for poorest students from the village during the school year (June to March).

5. To provide safe class rooms in the school.

6. To persuade the students parents to encourage their children to study

7. To continue their studies in Burma

As the next school year is only 2 months away, it would be great if we could raise the funds quickly so that the children can return to school in the new year with a new school building to learn and study in.
