This is a fundraiser for Sam Penny and Matt and Sam’s little daughter Freya.

Just over a year ago Matt received the devastating news that he had Stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer which had also spread to his liver. With a little daughter on her way and newly engaged, it’s the news every person dreads.

Very sadly Matt passed away on the 20th of February 2019. It has been an incredibly challenging time for all, and we want to do everything that we can to support Sam and Freya. The decision had been made to cease treatment and Matt moved to the Manly Waters Hospital where he could spend time with his family and friends in comfort. On the evening of the 20th, Matt was with his wife, Sam - they’d shared a beautiful evening, eating his mum's favourite home-made Shepherd’s Pie, had a walk to the balcony overlooking the harbour, and looked through photos of when Freya was tiny. He was in Sam’s arms when he passed.

Matt will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Matt always had a big smile for everyone. He was a loving, caring dad and husband. He was a mate who enjoyed chatting about the challenges of his football club, Fulham, surfing, playing sport, adventuring and challenging himself constantly. He is a man none of us will forget. We will always love you Matt.

About Matt

For those of you that knew Matt, you will know that he was a warrior.  He’s the man who still ran on the footie pitch whilst everyone else was exhausted. He’s the chap who breezed through triathlons like they were just a walk in the park. There are also very few people in the world who have completed an IronMan.. but Matt is one of them. It’s only fitting then, that we attempt one of his greatest achievements - the IronMan challenge!

The Challenge

None of us within his Australia family are fit enough to take on one leg of the IronMan, let alone the whole thing.  So, we are going to try and replicate Matt’s achievement in a mega IronMan relay in Sydney.

An IronMan consists of a:

- 3.86 km Swim

- 180.25 km Bike

- 42.2 km Run

Matt completed this in 11 hours 47 minutes - our aim is to beat this time!

We will have a small team who will work to complete each element of the IronMan distances, starting with the swim, then the bike then the run. This will take place on Saturday the 9th of March 2019 in Sydney. We will also be competing against a UK team “Squirrels Tri Club”.. we wish them all the best... but GO THE AUSSIES!!

Here’s a video about the challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziqPblr1zYo

We really appreciate every donation, however small or large and all proceeds go directly to Sam and Freya. For Sam, this will enable her to get through this next period of grief and help her get back on her feet and also help provide for little Freya.

Any questions feel free to drop us a message.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

WE DID IT!!!

On Saturday at 6.13am, whilst the sky was still dark, the IronMan challenge began, all three teams setting off on the first leg - the swim. Over the course of the day many people pushed themselves to the limit, trying to cycle faster, run harder or simply to not drown in the pool! There were many faces of pain but also heaps of smiles and laughs - people achieving times and distances they’d never done before. Over the course of the day, the three teams covered a staggering combined distance of 679km!

After each stint we could rest and relax, but in the knowledge that Matt wouldn’t have had this luxury, and would have continued on, completing all the sections by himself.

Unbelievably, the competition came down to the final lap, with two teams just 50 metres apart. Coming down the straight on the final lap both teams were neck and neck and crossed the line together hand in hand. An end very much in the spirit of the day. The time: 11 hours 38 minutes and 16 seconds.

We ended up beating Matt’s time by 9 minutes but it took a huge combined effort to get anywhere near his mark. What we didn’t mention previously, is that Matts time includes the 25 minutes Matt used in transitions (changing, resting, eating and getting ready for the next section) - we didn’t need this time as we were in a relay format. Therefore Matt’s true racing time should have been 11 hours 22 minutes. He was still quicker than us. We are still all in awe that he could have achieved this all on his own.

For those who entered the Guess the Time competition, the winner is:

Vicky Thompson who guessed 11 hours 40 minutes. Just 1 min 44secs off the correct time! Congratulations Vicky, we’ll be in touch!

And for those wondering how the UK team did, they did it in 11 hours 43 mins.. 5 minutes slower than the Aussies!

THANKS

Matt’s passing has created great sadness and loss for all his friends and family, but we have been absolutely blown away by how generous, compassionate and caring people are. We have had over 283 individual donations and have smashed our initial target of raising $10k. The messages of support, encouragement and well wishes are what’s kept us going.

To quote Sam, Matt’s wife, on Sunday:

“Feeling pretty stunned this morning by the effort, organisation and determination of yesterday. Thank you all so so much. Emotionally charged day. Lots of smiles and lots of tears.

Towards the end of Penny's life he had a few worries that used to panic him. Never about what he was going through and nearly always about the fact he wouldn’t be able to look after Freya and I.
Penny would be so comforted by everyone rallying like they did yesterday and so proud. I feel like he was there. Thank you for rallying and giving me support xxx”

And it’s true, many of us felt like Matt was there, guiding us, motivating us or simply in our thoughts, remembering what a heroic champion this man was.

Thank you so much again for supporting this cause.

We have some incredibly sad news to share with you. On the evening of February the 20th, Matt passed away.

The decision had been made to cease treatment and Matt moved to the Manly Waters Hospital where he could spend time with his family and friends in comfort. On the evening of the 20th, Matt was with his wife, Sam - they’d shared a beautiful evening, eating his mum's favourite home-made Shepherd’s Pie, had a walk to the balcony overlooking the harbour and looked through photos of when Freya, their daughter, was tiny. He was in Sam’s arms when he passed.

We have consulted with the Penny family and have made the decision to continue with our IronMan challenge. It is what Matt would have wanted and he was very excited about the event. It will also be a great tribute to a truly great man.

Thank you so much again for your donations, we all really appreciate it. For Sam, this will enable her to get through this next period of grief and help her get back on her feet and also help provide for little Freya. Sam is aware of what we are doing and has been blown away by people’s support, thoughts and compassion. And also for Matt, he felt so loved by the generosity and kindness shown by so many. Thank you.

Rest in peace mate
