Support our International Encounter

Tax deductible
Thank you for visiting our Non-Profit GoFundMe page!

Getting straight to the point, we are raising money for our International Cultural Festival - a rich cultural celebration of Brazil and Africa and a graduation for our students, right here in Highland Park, NJ. By donating, you will give students additional opportunities for learning, and reduce the financial strain on our organization to host this large multicultural event in our home town. This is our desired budget to make the event as diverse as we envision it. Thank you for your consideration, and feel free to read on to learn more about who we are and what we do.

We envision the following costs for the event, which takes place on October 25, 26 and 27 of this year:
--> $1250 for space rental Thurs-Sat (Workshops in martial arts, dance and music, cultural performances, student graduation)
--> $3000 Distinguished Guest Travel, Fees and Accomodations (Guests from Hawaii, Brazil and Europe)
--> $200 entertainment cost Saturday night - DJ, performers
--> $150 food costs for distinguished guests
--> $150 transportation costs
--> $150 advertising costs - printing materials, publishing sponsor information, supplies
--> $100 food costs for cultural party Saturday night

Have you ever wondered where your tax money goes? Have you ever wished that you could support a cause or organization of your choice rather than throwing your money in a big pile and letting someone else decide where it goes? Well, donating to a 501(c)(3) non-profit is a great way to write off some of your income to reduce your dues to the government at the end of the year! By choosing to donate to us, you will have full transparency and you can be sure that your money goes to enriching the lives of people in your community. Every penny donated will be used for an amazing cultural event in October of this year, and will go to fund new musical instruments, guest travel and accommodations, advertising and space rental for our event, and graduations for our students. Now, a few words about us...

The Capoeira Cultural Center is a part of one of the world's oldest Capoeira schools, Centro Cultural Senzala de Capoeira (hereafter, Senzala). The group originated in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, bringing together the great minds that would become the grandmasters of the school we know today as Senzala. The school’s philosophy has since expanded to many different countries, as students graduated to teachers and opened branches around the world. Senzala plays a very important role in the educational outreach of Capoeira by working with many different social and educational institutions in almost every country in the world.

The local New Jersey group, which started in 1999 in Princeton, now has many locations throughout the Tri-State area. Among other places, classes are held in the heart of Times Square in New York City, in the Ironbound in Newark, near Fishtown in Philadelphia, at Princeton University, and in the Hub City of New Brunswick and NJ’s First Green Community – Highland Park. In fact, the CCC is part of an immense network that has been inspiring thousands of people from various backgrounds for more than five decades.

So what is Capoeira and what does our organization actually do?

Capoeira is a self-defense system centered in a combination of music and dance. It focuses on the social and cultural aspects of life, and develops a sense of community and responsibility within its practitioners. Capoeira has played a significant role in Brazil’s history and now creates educational opportunities for people all over the world. The international network of Capoeira promotes diversity and tolerance by teaching discipline, social values and respect.

The Capoeira Cultural Center consists of a group of teachers who strive to provide the highest quality education for children and adults of all ages and all walks of life. Capoeira is not just about kicks and flips - it is a multidisciplinary art form. On an individual level it teaches balance, coordination, focus, mindfulness, courtesy, respect, rhythm, as well as how to play instruments, how to speak and recognize languages, how to effectively multitask using all senses, and how to dance like a Brazilian! On a group level, Capoeira teaches collaboration, community values, working through difficult situations, working with different personality types, and how to play in a band! Summed up in one word, Capoeira teaches confidence, which is important in self-development and being an effective part of a supportive community.

We invite you now to consider donating to a cause unlike many others! This cause is our annual International Festival and Graduation. This event is open to the community and features workshops in martial arts, music, dance, and creative thinking. The event is filled with vibrant cultural performances, entrancing musical acts, and impressive movement flow.

This event is an educational experience and idea exchange put forth through lectures, workshops, performances, and many opportunities for self-expression. It draws hundreds of participants and spectators locally and from around the world. The event is a 3-day forum during which students of all ages can engage in the history and culture of Brazil, as well as enjoy its music, rhythm and dance. It is also a celebration of Senzala’s 55th anniversary! The event takes place Thursday, October 25 and culminates with the Graduation and Cultural Show on Saturday October 27. There is also an after-party to celebrate Brazilian-style! More info on the website.

We are proud to say that October of this year will be the fourth time that the International Cultural Festival and Batizado will be held in Highland Park. We at the CCC are excited to bring such a unique event to our culturally diverse town. We believe that, if advertised properly, the event will play an important role in bringing together communities across the Tri-State Area. However, certain steps are required in order to achieve lasting community impact, such as renting a space in a visible location, ensuring we have equipment and musical instruments, spreading the word, and paying travel expenses and accommodations for guest teachers. We at the Capoeira Cultural Center are asking for your help in making this event the best that it can be.

We envision the following costs for the event:
--> $1250 for space rental Thurs-Sat (Workshops in martial arts, dance and music, cultural performances, student graduation)
--> $3000 Distinguished Guest Travel, Fees and Accomodations (Guests from Hawaii, Brazil and Europe)
--> $200 entertainment cost Saturday night - DJ, performers
--> $150 food costs for distinguished guests
--> $150 transportation costs
--> $150 advertising costs - printing materials, publishing sponsor information, supplies
--> $100 food costs for cultural party Saturday night

Our vision encompasses this year's international event as a means for further development of the Cultural Center by providing a safe space for adults and children of the Greater New Brunswick community. In a city that is undergoing constant positive revitalization, the Center promises to celebrate diversity and encourage the development of new ideas. If you have any questions or would like to support us in a different way, please do not hesitate to contact us for further information. Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely,
