There is a student of mine who has an 11 year old sister who is battling brain cancer. This has been a tremendous strain on my student and his family. They have a limited support system and even every day tasks can be an extreme struggle, not to mention the medical bills and other costs associated with this kind of disease. No family should have to experience this, especially with young children.
The mother is a single mom of three kids between the ages of 4 and 13. She has no family in the area, so it is just her to take care of these little ones. Her middle child is currently in the hospital with a Stage 4 Glioblastoma tumor in her brain. This tumor was diagnosed 4 years ago and has left her daughter blind in her left eye with minimal vision in her right eye, as well as causing seizures and other complications. Most recently, her daughter had a stroke that put her in a coma for about a week and currently she is expected to be in the hospital for at least the next 2 months. This mother has been doing everything she can to provide for her family and make life as normal as possible for her other two children, but because of her daughter’s deteriorating condition, she spends most of her time going to and from Riley. This has made it very hard for her to make ends meet, as she has had a hard time finding a job that will accommodate her need for a varying schedule because of her daughter’s medical needs. Mom knows she could stay at Ronald McDonald house and have many things provided for her and her family for free, but she does not want to “take the space away from another family that may live further away from the hospital”.
This is a family that is truly deserving of aid this holiday season. Whether you donate a little or a lot, every single dollar will help make a difference for this family!
