Industry & Out Campaign

This year we celebrated numerous historic achievements for communities of color. At long last, it felt as though our efforts in advocating for more diverse, authentic representation in the media had paid off. We witnessed an all-Black cast create an instant box office breakthrough with “Black Panther.” Fenty Beauty overturned the beauty industry by setting the standards of inclusivity. Most recently, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez – the daughter of two working class Puerto Rican immigrants – captured New York’s 14th Congressional District, affirming the public’s need for a voice that speaks to marginalized communities.

YET, we were also confronted with incredibly painful moments. We witnessed senseless mass shootings that took 17 lives in Parkland and 10 in Santa Fe. Hurricanes Harvey, Maria, and Irma ravaged culturally rich neighborhoods that were subsequently overlooked by the current administration. Most recently, we stood horrified as families were separated and children were ripped apart from their loved ones.

In all these tragedies, we have noticed a systematic pattern where our most vulnerable communities fall victim to violent and  negligent treatment. And as we are relentlessly inundated with news that make it comparatively hard for us to see meaning in our 9-to-5s – news that make it difficult to find anything else worth paying attention to – we feel helpless. Especially as juniors in the industry, the 2018 MAIP fellows wonder how we can effectively contribute to our jobs while also acting on our personal convictions.

But, these responsibilities of being present at work and caring about the state of the world are not mutually exclusive. Rather than choosing between our passions, we are firm in our belief that following our personal convictions outside the workplace will enhance our experiences within our agency walls. SO, we formed industry&OUT as a community-driven experiment to demonstrate that we have cultural capital as the next generation of industry leaders, and more importantly, that we can use our capital and talent pool to enact change.

This is a movement, not a moment; we are that much more committed to ensuring that this experiment becomes an exemplar for future generations of MAIP fellows to follow. Our faith in this experiment is strengthened by movements like #TimesUpAd and #NeverAgain, whose successes have demonstrated the impact of collective advocacy.

In its inaugural year, Industry&Out will support the fight to end family separation at the U.S.-Mexico border by encouraging agency leaders, political figures, and the MAIP family itself to take action within their respective industries.

Ultimately, action looks like:

-pro-bono work that we as industry&OUT will offer to local grassroots non-profit organizations,
-call sessions to senators and politicians
-ushering MAIPers from all over the country to get galvanized.

As a team that proudly represents people who identify with the immigrant experience – with expertise ranging from creative to production and strategy to account management – we have a unique collection of first hand experiences and a bandwidth of skills that make us qualified to act on our empathy through the world of advertising.

To show that change is possible, we will lead by example. So far, we’ve already dedicated much of our labor and time to multiple start-up meetings; we have organized a team of committed MAIP fellows into disciplines according to our strengths; we’ve compiled a list of grassroots organizations that we can support; we’re in the process of refining our visual identity and planning our channels of communication to make sure our contact with the public is consistent and intentional; and finally, we’ve stood up and shown our presence at the End Family Separation NYC Rally.

Day after day, we are getting increasingly dedicated in our personal convictions to change the world. But we can’t do it alone.

Here’s how you can get involved:
-Serve as a liaison that can help us reach our agencies better
-Promote the work we do
-Follow and get invested in our journey
-Offer your time, labor, fiscal support, network, etc…

If you are interested in getting involved, please email [email redacted] with a short description of how you imagine your involvement.
