My name is Charlie Maher, I am a proud Indigenous man from Central Australia. I am honoured to have been the first Aboriginal to have completed the New York Marathon under the mentorship of Rob De Castella and the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Since completing the New York Marathon, I have been lucky enough to have completed 4 of the world's 6 major marathons. My dream is complete all 6 and need some help to get to my 5th World Marathon in Chicage on 7th October 2018.
My life purpose is to inspire other Indigenous youth and to help in the efforts towards a reconciled Australia where we can all thrive and be proud of our heritage.
I personally have struggled and continue to struggle with depression and have found that along with medical, professional help (counselling) and being active through my running I have managed to minimise the effects. I hope that by being open and honest with my struggles, others feel the strength to reach out and ask for help if they are struggling with depression also.
Indigenous Youth have a much higher mortality rate, incarceration rate and many live with chronic diseases and a plethora of social injustices.
By continuing my journey running marathons and being the first Aboriginal man to have completed the world's 6 major marathons I hope to inspire and motivate others around me. I continue to be an ambassador for the Indigenous Marathon Foundation and have founded a local running and walking group with my wife to encourage and support Indigenous families to participate and lead healthy lifestyles. I believe in the power of role modelling good behaviour and for Indigenous youth to have role models they can look to in all fields, wether it be sport, business, education etc.
My wife and I have a young family and have put towards as much money as we can towards this trip and would appreciate any financial help you are able to give. I will ensure that being able to run this marathon will not only serve to allow me to get closer to fulfilling my dream but also have huge ripples in effecting others around me to have the courage to follow theirs.
