In Memory of Our Friend Brian Lahaie

It is with broken hearts we share with you that in the wee hours of March 26th we lost our dear friend and band-mate Brain Lahaie. Brian was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer in early February and left us peacefully, his partner Mira by his side. Brian is survived by Mira and their young daughter Davida, his mother Tuula, Brother Trevor, In-laws Shari and David, sister-in-law Hannah, and brother-in-law Luke.

You didn’t have to know Brian to see how the room lit up when he entered it. An easy laugh, a genuine smile and kind eyes, he was loved by everyone who met him. Truly, he was one of the most gentle and generous human beings you could ever meet and his loss is not only a great blow to his family and friends but also to his colleagues in the music community.

Growing up in Lively, Ontario, Brian started his musical adventure in earnest as a teenager playing in the Sudbury area. He became a busy and much sought after musician in Toronto after moving to the city to attend university. For the past two decades as a drummer and a producer, Brian worked with countless artists in Toronto and across Canada. Brian was always acutely aware of the sentiment of the song he was playing or engineering and his sensitivity translated accordingly, whether it be a folk song or psychedelic rock and everything in between. A gentle giant, bobbing around in intense concentration - always having the best time. He was a solid band-mate to anyone who played with him, and his lightness on stage, in rehearsal or in the studio made the ups and downs of the musician’s life easier for us all.

As much as his death is a loss to his community, the most important things in the life of Brian were Mira and Davida. Mira was Brian's soulmate. When his head was in the clouds, her feet were on the ground. They were as well matched as you can imagine a couple being, accentuating the other's strengths and supporting the other's weaknesses. When their daughter was born their sacred triad was completed. Brian loved being a father and Davida was his greatest joy. He would tell anybody who would listen that "being a dad is the best!" If he didn't have to work ever he would have been content to live his life looking into her smiling face day in and day out, going for walks in the park and trying to answer life's most difficult questions for her.

Though we can't bring this incredibly beautiful human back to us, we can show our support by helping Mira and Davida through these difficult days ahead, as well as contribute to helping with Davida's care and education funding.

We thank you for your support!
