In loving memory of Stannis

On February 28, we unexpectedly lost our beloved Stannis to a mystery illness. In less than 24 hours he went from being his usual self to passing away in front of us at our local vet clinic.

Stannis had never before been sick, and at only four and half years young, this was a terrible, and unexpected turn of events. He was an otherwise healthy, very well loved and cared for animal and losing him and not knowing why has made this experience all the more traumatic for us.

For those of you who know Kane, you will have followed Stannis's life through social media, and you will know how much this gorgeous animal meant to him. They had a bond that I can't even begin to describe to you. Stannis understood Kane on a level that made them the best of friends. He knew when Kane needed to laugh and he would do something funny, he knew when Kane needed a hug and he would tollerate being picked up and being babied around or he would curl up in bed and just hang out, and be a much need friend in tough times.

From my perspective, their love of each other made my days brighter. They were so often like two kids together. From Stannis's endless amusement at running and sliding on the rug on the wooden floors in our apartment, to watching him torture Kane by waiting until just after his litterbox had been freshly washed to use it straight away, he made me laugh so much. He sat and kept me company on days that I worked at home, and usually attempted to steal my lunch from me. I will miss so many things about him.

In December, we adopted a one year old tiny black cat, a female named Joy, who had lost her eye in an accident. We chose to bring her into our home because she needed to go to a place that had another cat that could help her find some confidence after the loss of her eye. Stannis was always good with other cats and we knew he would be a wonderful big brother. Joy is missing Stannis but it warms my heart that his legacy is that even in their short time together, little Joy has blossomed into a confident, sassy little girl. Stannis taught her so much and his spirit will live on in her.

We are lucky that we have the love of each other, and Joy, to emotionally move through this challenging time, but the next part of our journey is we owe the vet money to pay for the treatment, and cremation of Stannis. We both work extremely hard, but we live on a tight budget. We've spent the last six months of our life together, setting things up, and the reality of our situation is that we just didn't have a rainy day fund to call on in this unexpected situation. We're trying to raise the money ourselves through finding extra work but we're having varying degrees of success.

Asking for money is hard. We ask with no expectations of anyone, only that if you can spare a few dollars, we would appreciate it more than we can express. Stannis's vet bill, including his cremation is around $1400 and we can pay some of it to start with, but not all.
