As a direct reaction to the violence overwhelming our communities, The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, will introduce the “Bridge to Peace Project” – a art exhibition, and cultural series directly addressing the multifaceted and interconnected issues of violence in Louisville and Southern Indiana.

The project will host the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW (The Innovative Merger of Art and Guns to Inspire New Expressions of Peace Now) exhibition, an exhibition organized by renowned metalsmith artist Boris Bally. The show features dozens of works made from decommissioned firearms, by artists from the United States and 6 other countries. From September thru November, 2017, “Bridge to Peace” will serve as an artistic catalyst for not only critical discussion, but also ongoing action.

The proposed “Bridge to Peace Project” will work to present violence as a phenomenon that is more than just incidental, but nuanced, deeply rooted, and non-discriminate. Southern Indiana and Louisville are no strangers to violence. The “Bridge to Peace” project will directly address these questions: “What needs to change, and how will each individual implement these changes?” The awareness is there, and the effects of bullets surpass the barriers of area codes.

While the public is aware of the specific incidents of violence, the intense repercussions of gun violence are deeply layered. The impact does not end once a victim is deceased. It is profound and ongoing. I.M.A.G.I.N.E. PEACE NOW constructs a theoretical portrait of violence -- calling on themes of greed, systematic oppression, irony, and beauty. Each artist’s interpretation of the gun as an object is insightfully represented.

Gun violence is not stopping, more vigils are being held, and more “RIP” shirts are being made. Makeshift memorials elaborately adorn street corners across the country. The impact of gun violence has become so pertinent that virtually everyone is affected whether directly or indirectly.
