Even in 2017, LGBTQ youth suffer the lack of empathy and acceptance. They’re susceptible for depression, self-harm, and suicidal tendencies. And when the lack of acceptance and hate becomes institutionalized in our own government, their chances for a normal life decrease even more dramatically.
America has long prided itself to be diverse. We accept people and judge them by their merit and not by their beliefs or lifestyle choices. And so it is an even greater shame that hate and bigotry is increasingly becoming a norm instead of a crime. And committing a crime against vulnerable youth makes it even more horrible. We have to act. We have to fight for them, because too often they can’t fight for themselves.
The Trevor Project is providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for young people who are lesbians, gays, transgender, or questioning. They fight for those who would silently fade away. And we’re proud to support their fight.
