iFLY Indoor Skydiving STEM Education Field Trip
Purpose: As an incentive, students are working toward an educational field trip to iFLY Indoor Skydiving to participate in their STEM program, which Miss Mankiewicz will be teaching at their facility in Rosemont, IL. This STEM program, along with the math lessons that Miss Mankiewicz is teaching throughout the school year align with the Common Core as well as the Next Generation Science Standards. Each math lesson is differentiated to reach the ability levels and needs of all students, as will the lesson at iFLY. This incentive gives students the opportunity to see how the science, technology and math that they are learning about now at an elementary level, in combination with engineering, is applied in the real world, exemplified with the construction and operation details of the wind tunnel, dynamics of body flight and completion of a wind tunnel related experiment.
Criteria: For second semester, students must have an overall grade of C- or above in Miss Mankiewicz’s 7th grade math class, have not received any major discipline referrals from any teacher/administrator and must not have any missing assignments in math to be eligible for this incentive. If a student is deficient in meeting the assignment or behavior criteria by one, they will be eligible for a second chance, in which they will need to complete a form to state their reasons for which they should be eligibile, which will then be reviewed by Miss Mankiewicz, Miss Tyjeski (7th grade special ed co-teacher) and the teacher/administrator that wrote the referral (if applicable). Attendance and participation in specifically tailored science lessons during FIT will be a requirement as well. (see below)
Additional Information: Miss Mankiewicz and Mr. Watts (7th grade science) are collaborating to design and deliver fun and educational lessons tailored to correspond with the iFLY STEM lesson; to help students see how specific concepts in math and science apply to their real world experience at iFLY. Miss Mankiewicz and Mr. Watts will team teach these lessons during FIT one to two times weekly once all funding has been acquired for this field trip. All students are encouraged to attend even if they believe they may currently be ineligible. Concepts in both the lesson and experiment at iFLY as well as lessons with Miss Mankiewicz and Mr. Watts include the following:
- Force and air resistance
- Force and motion
- Pre-algebra, algebra and geometry math objectives
- Kinetic energy (airstream)
- Fluids and solids
- Viscosity
- Static and dynamic pressure
- Aerodynamic drag
- Gravitational force vs. drag force
- Air velocity
- Surface area vs. frontal area
Miss Mankiewicz and Miss Tyjeski have discussed details regarding ineligible students, as well as options for students that may meet criteria, but are not eligible for an off campus incentive. For the latter, students will be offered an on campus incentive on another date.
