On October 27th, 2014, Vanessa was rushed to the hospital after having a seizure at work. Once they arrived by ambulance, then a battery of tests, this wonderful person was informed that she had a brain tumor (Anaplastic Astrocytoma). Surgery went well but her family and friends were devastated to find out that the tumor was cancerous. Everyone immediately knew after hearing the doctor's report, the battle Vanessa had ahead of her. Vanessa has begun chemotherapy as well as radiation to aggressively fight the cancer.

Along with the cancer diagnosis Vanessa was also informed that due to her status of tenure with her current company she was notified that her employer contributions would be removed. Now the full monthly costs of healthcare fall on her shoulders. As you can imagine she is now faced with medical expenses, living expenses, along with everyday bills that don't magically disappear when you are given such a diagnosis. She is unable to work until May 2015 at the earliest and in need of some assistance. When things like this happen people are often stressed with finances when ultimately they should be able to focus soley on recovery.

Vanessa is one of the most caring, devoted, thoughtful friends to all who know her. She's the friend that would drop everything just to be there for others in a time of need. Vanessa lights up the room when she walks in with her dazzling smile. Even during this time her sparkling personality continues to shine bright and deliver happiness to others. She is a fighter and is ready to kick cancer's a$$.

Any donation towards her recovery is greatly appreciated. Even a small contribution is impactful. The goal is to help her financially through May. This will give her the greatest chance to be as strong as she can be while she successfully defeats this devastating disease.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers for Vanessa and her family.

It is with absolute sadness to share that our wonderful Vanessa ended her battle with cancer yesterday. She passed peacefully in her mother's loving arms after a hard fight since May 3rd. Even with the knowledge that her time was limited she still stayed positive and wanted to enjoy all aspects of life and interactions with her loved ones. Her mother is now making funeral arrangements for her only child. Since Vanessa was diagnosed with brain cancer (almost four years ago) she has been unable to work. At this time ANY help toward funeral expenses would be appreciated more than you could ever know. Let's help Joan focus on the special details and not the stresses of how it will all come together. It truly is difficult to imagine a life without Pinky and her contagious laugh and joy towards life. Rest easy Vanessa, until we see you again soon.

Our dear Vanessa has had some rough days since early May. It all started this past fall when an MRI showed that the cancer had returned. Her doctors were very aggressive and felt they could come up with a plan to make sure she could fight off this disease again. But on May 3rd her family and friends received the worse possible news. She had a few intense seizures and was being rushed to the hospital. The brain tumor had grown immensely and they wanted to immediately perform surgery. But there was a catch, if surgery was performed Vanessa would be paralyzed on half of her body, would lose her ability to speak, and would only survive for less than a year because the tumor would return. Since that Thursday she has been shuffled around to many floors in the hospital and even attempted to find help in Jacksonville.

Vanessa is now home with her mother (who moved here from Guyana to be with her only child). She is still having seizures and some days are better than others. Her family and friends are overjoyed when Vanessa is able to laugh. The doctors aren’t sure if she will be able to be operated on at this point because of the aggressive growth of the tumor. So now her loved ones will have to be patient and wait and hope for a miracle. She’s continuing with radiation daily in hopes that the tumor will cease to increase. After a few more weeks of evaluations the team of doctors will decide if surgery is an option.

At this time the family could really use some financial support. Sadly, since Vanessa was first diagnosed almost four years ago she hasn't been able to work. Please help relieve some of the stress this amazing family is currently enduring. That way the only focus can be directed towards being positive and present for Vanessa. We are all rooting for Vanessa, prayers are powerful!

Time for an update! I had the honor of transporting Vanessa and her warm and caring mother to radiation last week. It was very enlightening to see what Vanessa goes through each day. Each day she travels to Winter Park to do a radiation treatment. Vanessa isn't allowed to legally drive because of her seizures, and her mom doesn't drive so each day she is required to find a ride. I felt overjoyed to do my part to help out while I had a break from school. Vanessa continues to radiate positive energy throughout this journey. Everyone at the hospital knew Vanessa and were delighted to see her smiling face. She is beginning to lose the majority of her hair but she's not afraid to show others how the treatments have affected her. She's happy to share her story with anyone she comes in contact with.
Our second day together Vanessa ran into a young girl who also has brain cancer. This was their first time meeting face to face. Vanessa had heard about this 13 year old and immediately bought hats to help her also cope with her hair loss. I'm telling you she is so generous and constantly thinking of others!
Vanessa will have her last radiation treatment tomorrow and then will have a break. Chemo will continue for a little while longer. Then she will receive treatments as needed. We are all looking forward to celebrating a break in radiation tomorrow.
Vanessa has had two seizures since her brain surgery. Each time have been terrifying to her family and friends- her mom doesn't trust her being left alone which is completely understandable.
Thanks for continuing to spread the word of Pinky's story. She will continue to be out of work until May so any continued contributions would be greatly appreciated and needed.
