WRITING THROUGH FENCES PUBLICATION FUND for WRITERS AND ARTISTS IN DETENTION.

WRITING THROUGH FENCES is a writing and arts community made up of people who are or have been imprisoned in immigration detention - and some of their friends who are outside the detention industry.  We are unfunded and rely on donations from the wider community to complete our projects.

The aim of this group is to create a community of strength based on shared respect and creativity through online workshops, performances and publications.  Here we are making art and ourselves.

The main costs are in PUBLISHING.  All monies raised through publishing go to the writers once associated costs are paid.

So far we have published 3 collections including: Our Beautiful Voices (poetry chapbook by writers in detention 2013); From Hell to Hell (collection of poetry by S. Nagaveeran - Ravi), I Will Rise (collection of poetry and prose by Hani Abdile).

The name "Writing Through Fences" refers to the fact that through our writing (or other acts of creation) we are crossing through fences, literal and metaphoric, that would separate us from each other.

We are opening this crowd funding so that we can continue to publish the important work coming out from behind the fences of Australia’s detention industry.

 PROJECTS needing funding:

-   further printing of Hani Abdile’s poetry collection ‘I Will Rise’.

-   three memoirs by people incarcerated in immigration detention almost ready for production,

-   a book of short stories by a Tamil writer,

-   a book of cartoons by Eaten Fish,

-   a poetry anthology that includes work from many of Australia’s detention centres,

-   a zine of art work and writing by women in detention,

-  a book of essays, poetry, letters and art work coming out of Manus Island.
