PROJECT

I AM OTHER

The I AM OTHER photo documentary series, research and archival  is project that challenges  the narrative that queerness and Gender non conformity  are a complete negation of Africanness. This project is borne of the erasure of queer, trans and gender nonconforming persons of African descent by the historical imposition of the  gender binary  through colonialism, Euro-American  cultural hegemony in the modern era. .Through the exploration of gender, race and class “I AM OTHER”  seeks to address this erasure and provide a platform for queer, trans and gender non-conforming Africans for self -authorship and visibility extending into justice.

The Journey.
This body of work that began in Uganda, 2015, is one I did not imagine would have such a profound impact on me; It has been a journey of self- discovery and affirmation. Finding myself through the discovery of the OTHERS has been a life changing experience and the joy of my life.

While this journey has been a fulfilling one, it has not come without its challenges. Uganda continues to be a very violent and hostile environment for LGBTQI persons, especially for visibly queer, Trans and gender nonconforming who face the brunt of criminalization, violence and murder by both state actors and the intimate communities in which they live.

It is for this reason I immigrated to Germany, however the challenges did not end in Uganda, I have continued to be met with hostility as a Black gender non-conforming migrant in Germany. Throughout Europe Black and brown Trans and gender non-conforming persons have our realities and narratives erased as we constantly face an onslaught of violence. This hostility has only strengthened my resolve to continuing and expanding the scope of “I AM OTHER.”

Through the memory  of the incredibly resilient community in which I was able to find myself, sheer will, the incredible generosity and support of dear friends I am privileged to now call family in the last 2 years  I AM OTHER has grown and been realized at venues across Europe through Exhibition, Performance, lectures and workshops.
