For Tyrea, a 12th grade student at McKinley High School, the Humanities Amped program teaches that “you can make change in the world, not through violence, but through your voice.” For J’Arius, Humanities Amped means that “school doesn’t have to be miserable.” We believe that school should be a place where every student feels the way that Tyrea and J’Arius do— interested in learning and ready to participate in civic life. In 2014, Humanities Amped began as one class with 25 students and two teachers. Today we provide 22 classes for 250+ students. Little by little, we are transforming education from the inside out.

Schools that serve majority Black and immigrant youth from working class backgrounds face an array of challenges in the era of high stakes testing and divestment in public education: one in three students in our parish doesn’t make it to graduation, and teacher turnover is sharply on the rise. In Louisiana, the prison capital of the world, school suspensions and expulsions are among the strongest contributing factors to youth criminalization. There is an alarming need to invest in opportunities for youth in public schools.

At Humanities Amped, we believe that investment begins with changing the way students are perceived, not as problems to be solved, but as problem solvers. Grassroots engagement is the heart of our mission, and it can be seen in the Humanities Amped classroom every day— whether in our student-led Restorative Justice Lab, the action research of our English Language Learner cohorts, the community oral histories being collected in our African American Studies classes, or the student Writing Leaders who teach writing to 4th and 5th grade students each week at neighboring Buchanan Elementary.

Tyrea, J’Arius, and the hundreds of other capable Humanities Amped students deserve no less than our full investment. Please invest with us by making a donation directly here!

Every dollar you donate to Humanities Amped amplifies opportunities for a young person to participate fully and joyfully in the education that each person deserves to have.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Humanities Amped,

Since we began fundraising last August, we have been able to make so much happen through your donations, grants, and the everyday investments of people who continue to create ways for Humanities Amped to grow as network of renewed possibilities within our public school system. As we close out the campaign we began last August, we want to report that we've raised $3,000 on Go Fund Me and another $6,170 via donations mailed to us or at our website, www.humanitiesamped.com. That's a total of $9,170.

Here's what your support has made happen:
-225 Humanities Amped students participated in conferences in November in which they dialogued with alumni at the McKinley Alumni Center, saw models of socially-engaged research with mentors at LSU, or spent the day with bilingual community leaders working to uplift immigrant communities.
-Brothers Empowered to Teach became an official partner of Humanities Amped, allowing us to bring on Justin, Jovanie, Alana, and Paris, college-aged interns who provide models of possibility and in-class support for student learning.
-Humanities Amped staff worked with school officials to bring alumnus Pedro Cerda-Torres onto the Humanities Amped team as a para-professional where he provides joyful and critical supports every day for students in his own former English Language Learners class.
-Humanities Amped students and teachers attended the United We Dream Conference in Miami, FL, and presented a social justice game we created with our collaborators from Forward Arts at the Harvard Arts-in-Education Conference in Cambridge, MA in October.
-Humanities Amped staff recruited and engaged community mentors who spent 365 hours working with students in the last year; many of those hours were spent working with students on the 87 critical research and action projects that will be presented at the upcoming conference in April 2019.

By next year, we plan to make Humanities Amped curriculum more widely available to educators everywhere, introduce new courses aimed at preparing youth to become the next generation of educational leaders, offer college and career counseling, and hire our first staff person.

As 11th grade Marissa explains, Humanities Amped "brought about my courage, my leadership, and my voice." We believe that's just what an education should be, and the surprising, beautiful, sometimes rocky journey towards that vision is what you make possible. Become a regular donor on our webpage, www.humanitiesamped.com and help us to keep making the path wider for all to come.

Together, we can continue amplifying a grassroots network of people and possibilities in our public schools!

Sincerely,
The Teachers & Organizers of Humanities Amped
