Eating with Africa - A food Safari

"Eating with Africa" is the journey of photographer Maria Schiffer who is traveling alone through 10 African countries in 1 year, collecting 50 stories and 50 recipes from the homes of African people, to create the cookbook "Eating with  Africa", intended for publication in 2019. The idea behind this project is to explain and get to know a complex and diverse continent through food.

Most people in the West speak of Africa as if it were one country, when really it's a continent with 54 countries. There is more to it than poverty, hunger, wars and safaris.  By letting the locals speak for themselves and show her what their Africa looks like, Maria Schiffer wants to give insight into the real Africa.

Maria became acquainted with Africa in journeys previous to this project. To date, she has visited 10 countries on the continent.   In the last 6 months for "Eating with Africa" she's been to  Malawi, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa. Next up in July and August is São Tomé and Príncipe, Africa's second smallest country, leaving only five more destinations open to travel to until completion.  As of now, Maria is financing the journey out of her own pocket. Everything she earns back in Berlin is invested directly into the project.

So at the moment every cent counts! By donating here, you will be helping her fund the next 12-day-trip, exploring  São Tomé and Príncipe as well as finance the preparations and the trips for the last five countries ahead.  Altogether €13,500 alone for travel costs, is still needed to pull this journey through in one year. 

But until then she's sticking with the words of Nelson Mandela: 
“It always seems impossible until it is done.”
