Feed the Oklahoma Heritage Horses

Donation protected

Your donation will help sustain these rare, historic, and beautiful animals through the upcoming winter months! Your help is urgently needed!
A ton of feed currently costs $212 and round bales of hay are running $30 - $35.00. There are approximately 260 horses that need to be fed. It will take a minimum of 150 tons to sustain them through the next 4 to 5 months, totaling $31,800. We have a long-term mission to find permanent and bountiful home pasturage for the core breeding stock of the Heritage Horse, but the immediate and critical need is to provide supplemental feed and vet care for the winter and year round for these small foundation herds.

Each horse has a rich heritage waiting to be explored. The Choctaw people's connection to these horses runs deep. The Choctaw ponies originated from Spanish horses brought to the Americas by early settlers and were later relocated during the Trail of Tears as tribal people were removed from their ancestral homes. These horses were carefully bred and maintained by families who valued them as cultural treasures.

                            Documentary and his band

The proud stallion “Documentary” belongs to the strain of rare Colonial Spanish horses which has been designated by our state legislature as the Heritage Horse of Oklahoma.  Some time ago Documentary escaped with his band of mares by crossing the great Kiamichi River and leading them up into the remote timberlands of Blackjack Mountain – his birthplace.  This exploit inspired both awe for these horses’ courage and deep concern for their safety, because Documentary and the other Heritage Horses are an equine treasure. Successfully recaptured just weeks ago, Documentary and his band are now settled in secure pasture near Antlers, OK.
