Hope for Hudson

Donation protected
This Go Fund Me has been set up to help with Hudson's critical veterinary treatment.

Hudson (aka @Hudsondoodle) is a cheerful goldendoodle living in the Chicago area who is struggling to stay alive. Here is his tragic story:

Hudson loves life and he loves people.

His favorite thing in life is giving giant bear hugs. He smiles and does a full body wag whenever he sees his friends, especially his caretakers and fellow doodles at Pooch Hotel and Urban Pooch, his favorite vets at Pets First Chicago, and even strangers on the street.

His goofy doodle grin and his lust for life are infectious. We thought about training him as a therapy dog, but he just loves people too much!!

Unfortunately, last week he came down with a seemingly benign cough, which is very common in Chicago these days. We were worried it might be the new strain of dog flu that wreaked havoc on the city last spring, so we kept a close eye on him. He was fine for a week, with no signs of a secondary infection. Despite his cough, he continued to be his happy energetic self, constantly playing with his shih-tzu brother Ernie.

Then out of the blue, on Wednesday morning, his body just shut down and he had to be rushed to the ER (the Veterinary Specialty Center in Buffalo Grove). He had a fever of 106 and was diagnosed with pneumonia and became septic. After 2 grueling days in the ICU, his lungs were 80% full of fluid, his blood oxygen was dangerously low, and he was working much too hard to get the oxygen his body needs, even under oxygen treatment. The doctors determined that he also has acute respiratory distress.

The vet said that very soon his organs will start to shut down, as his body is just too tired to keep trying...unless...they put him on a ventilator.

A few days on a ventilator will allow the vet to completely inflate his lungs with much needed oxygen while allowing his body to rest and the antibiotics to start working to clear the infection from his lungs.

Unfortunately, the cost for 4 days of ventilation treatment can be over $20,000, which is far too much for most people to swallow (including us).

But... without the ventilation... he will die. Ventilation is the only hope for his survival.

Hudson is our best friend, and we cannot give up on our best friend. So we made the financially difficult decision to keep trying for Hudson, regardless of the cost.  As long as he keeps fighting, we'll find a way to keep fighting.

He has so many great friends in Chicago, on Facebook, and also on Instagram, and a devoted and loving extended family, all of whom want to help see him through this. So we have taken their advice and set up this account for him.

All donations will go toward his ventilation treatment at Veterinary Specialty Services in Buffalo Grove, IL. It won't cover all of his treatment and ICU care, but it will definifetly help us extend it for as long as we can, giving him a fighting chance.

He has given so much joy to so many people. A second chance at life is the least we can do for him. His second birthday is on October 19. Please help us do all we can to ensure he celebrates his second birthday, and many more birthdays after that.

We are providing regular updates regarding his status on this page and on his Instagram account (@hudsondoodle). Hudsondoodle's Instagram

When he makes it through this ordeal, he will thank each and every one of you with a big doodle hug and a sloppy doodle kiss.

We are forever grateful for everyone's love and support. Let's do this for Hudson!

Thank you!!
