YOU HAVE CANCER....

The three words none of us ever hope to hear, and we certainly don't expect to hear them in our forties.  This is exactly what happened to my very dear friend Laurie Yeast in March 2017.  After experiencing several months of pain during and after eating, her Doctor decided to get to the root of  the problem and sent her for a barium x-ray and scope.  It revealed esophageal and stomach cancer.  Further testing confirmed the diagnosis.  The cancer was determined to be stage 3 and the tumour is blocking more than 50% of her esophagus and has invaded her stomach.
Everything moved very quickly from there.  Appointments were scheduled with specialists, treatment protocols and options were discussed.  The plan to attack and battle Laurie's cancer was decided.  Five weeks of chemo and radiation followed by six - eight weeks of recovery.  Radiation is 5 days a week and chemotherapy is once a week.  This has already begun.

Then the big event... Surgery.  Laurie will have her entire esophagus removed along with one third of her stomach.  Yes, you read that right.  The surgeon will then create an esophagus out of the stomach that remains.  She will be in hospital for a minimum of two weeks after surgery, followed by months of recovery.  Initially Laurie will have a tube inserted surgically into her abdomen to deliver nutrition and medication until enough healing has taken place to allow her to re-learn to swallow and eat again.  Recovering from this surgery will be long and difficult.
Let's talk about the most wonderful part of Laurie's life.  Her three beautiful children Blake, Payton and Brody.  Laurie is a single mom and these three angels are her entire world.  She has vowed to fight for them, to be here for them and to do everything in her power to beat this disease so that they can grow up with their mom.

Laurie is self employed in new home construction and has worked for many years in the industry.  I always thought about how fantastic it would be to work for myself until this happened to my friend.  There is no paid sick time, no short term disability, no long term disability, no anything!  Essentially she is on her own financially and is already unable to work as the nature of her job is very physical.  It's also next to impossible to actually find time to work with the extremely busy treatment schedule she has been given.  Based on treatment, surgery and recovery timelines, Laurie will be unable  to work for approximately one year.
You already know where I am headed with this so I will cut right to the chase because I know your time is precious.  The bills are not going to go away while Laurie is unable to work.  Rent, utilities, food for her children, medication.  It all costs money and all of it is a necessity.  I am asking you to help out a mother, a friend, a daughter, a sister, a wonderful human being.  She is one of the most giving people I know and is ALWAYS there to help out anyone who needs it.  Help is something that is difficult to ask for and most of us end up not asking.  This is why I have decided to create this page.  Laurie will not ask for help because she's too darn proud, so here I am asking for her.
Laurie should be focusing all of her energy on fighting and beating her cancer instead of stressing about how to feed her children and keep a roof over their heads. Please don't just scroll past because every little bit counts, and helps in a huge way.
