Independence for Mitchell

$32,982 of $37,000 goal

My younger brother Mitchell has suffered from a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) since he was born. This disease does not allow his muscles grow and therefore his condition similar to that of a quadriplegic - someone that is paralyzed from the neck, down. The house he lives in with my parents is very small and it makes life difficult for Mitchell while trying to get around in his wheelchair. Mundane tasks like preparing a meal, going to the bathroom, showering, or brushing his teeth are overly complicated and take up much of his day.

Despite his limitations, Mitchell is an extremely generous person. He volunteers hours of his time every week to a local organization that helps those with drug addictions overcome their personal obstacles.

We want to, in turn, help Mitchell overcome some of his own daily obstacles that are due to his debilitating physical condition.

We would like to convert the unfinished basement in his parent's house to a fully handicap-friendly living environment for Mitchell. Our parents were out of work for over a year and our dad just recently found work in an entry-level position for a local car manufacturer. Needless to say, money is tight.
The basement would be complete with wheelchair-height counters, refrigerator, and remote control doors and windows. We can do it for the cost we are asking. We have hundreds of hours of volunteer labor currently, as well as donated materials, and resources. There are some costs that require professional construction companies and we are asking for help. Mitchell is bound daily by tasks many of us take for granted. We want to offer Mitchell some freedom. Will you help us?

Over the last week and a half a huge push came through from so many volunteers. We also had some large donations and now I can say we are fully funded AND "Mitchell's Project" is complete! Mitchell moved in a few days ago and hosted his very first party. Friends and family came over to watch Super Bowl XLIX! I will post a video of the completed space. Mitchell will be hosting a drop in this month as a thank you to all the people who helped make this possible. More to come this week!
