Honoring the Legacy of my Oma

As some of you know, my Oma gained her angel wings last week. It has been a bittersweet moment for my family. We are happy that she is now in Heaven: dancing, standing on her head, and not suffering anymore. However, we will miss her dearly here on Earth: her smile, her laughter, and her physical presence.
As many of you know, Oma suffered from dementia and Alzheimer’s. I’d like to say that this disease has only affected my family, but the sad truth is that it hasn’t. In fact, many loved ones across the United States suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. Nearly one in every three seniors who die each year has Alzheimer’s or dementia.
When my Uncle Tom, Oma's son, died of AIDS in the 80s, my Oma turned her grief into passion. A passion to help people with AIDS and raise funds so that one day, families wouldn’t have to know the grief that she had when she lost her son.
I can think of no better way to honor my Oma’s life and legacy than to follow in her footsteps and raise funds for Alzheimer’s research. I have lost two grandmothers to this horrible disease and I want to turn my grief into something positive for others.
As such, I have set up this GoFundMe page. On Sunday, October 22, I will be running my 4thMarine Corps Marathon. This marathon will be different for me, because it will be in memory of my Oma. As a way to honor her legacy, I would like to ask you to contribute to my GoFundMe account. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association to help find a cure for this awful disease.
