Honoring the legacy of Katie Gneiting

As a former student of Katie Gneiting, I was so very saddened by her sudden loss. Katie spent 33 years within the Columbus Elementary School and in our community. She made an impact on so many of our lives. She was a wonderful person, a great teacher and a fabulous musician. Christi Longin (her fellow teacher) and I wanted to do something to honor her. We reached out to her family and received their blessing to raise funds for a new Clavinova Piano and a reading bench to be donated to Columbus Elementary School to honor her legacy and her lifelong love of music and reading.
From her daughter Vanessa:
Katie was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October 2018, after a very sudden bout of illness. She moved to Tacoma to be with her family and spend as much time as possible with her grandson, Jack. She passed away very peacefully on Valentine’s Day 2019, five months after her diagnosis.
During those months she was able to visit with so many friends (both in person, and through technology and written notes), visit the beach, hot tub, take Jack to Great Wolf Lodge, visit her new home in Leavenworth, have a wonderful Christmas, and snuggle the family dog. She remained full of love, life, and strength — no matter how she felt each morning, she found the energy to read Jack a story first thing and had some special time with him, often before the rest of the House was awake. This important job has been passed on to Papa
Katie always had an extreme love of music and children, and found every opportunity to bring both of those into her life. She will be forever remembered as a genuine friend, a kind soul, and a loved member of the community. She was also a loving wife, supportive mother, and the very best grandmother.
Katie is missed wonderfully every single day, and so we are hoping to spread some of her love to give back to the kids she cared so much for... And to always remember the importance of music and reading in life.
