Honor Ramiro Colon's Life and Memory

Donation protected
On Sunday September 22, 2019, our beloved Papi, Tio, and Godfather Ramiro Colon Jr. passed. Those of you that knew Ramiro know that he was a humble man. A man that would open his doors to anyone and help whenever he was able. Now, he and his family, need your help.

Ramiro passed in Florida, but it was his wish was to be buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, along side his brothers. Rather than sending flowers the family asks that you help bring Ramiro home. The costs are as follows:

Preparation and transportation - $3,700
Plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery - $11,000
Service and Mass on Saturday Oct 12th - $2,780
Total - $19,380

A message from daughter, Sandy Colon Ausua:

When asked, “how important is family?” One name comes to mind, my Papi, Ramiro Colon Jr. Growing up I remember my father always helping people. Friends, family, and even the next-door neighbors. I remember being 5 years old in Puerto Rico and kissing my daddy goodbye before he would leave to help my Tio Catitio deliver products all over the island.  I remember him always telling us how important it was to help our family because without family we have nothing.

I remember listening to Victor Ortiz Sr. tell us the story of how my parents meet. They were at a Puerto Rican dance, and my dad was too afraid to talk to my mom. Thankfully Vitin intervened on my father’s behalf. They married and Cristobal, Luis, and I soon followed.

Even though my dad was disabled by the time he was 21, he (along with my mom) continued to give us the best he could. If he wasn’t helping his brother with his business or fix his property, then he has working on cars at our home. He bought used cars and fixed them to sell. He did everything he could to provide for us.

Without family the beautiful house we had on Santa Clara would never have been. I remember the house always being full of life. The backyard was full of birthday parties, dominos, roasting pigs, and a lot of hang over soup. I remember watching my family build a house in that backyard so that our grandparents could come from Puerto Rico.

Faith was very important to my father and he made sure we were baptized, made our first communion, and were confirmed. He also expected us to go to church every Sunday. He also wanted us to graduate from High school. This was important to him because he went to night school to finish his.

I remember people referring to my father as the Puerto Rican Elvis because of his jet-black hair and the way he combed it. I have this picture of my dad wearing jeans and white t-shirt with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in a sleeve. To me he looked like "James Dean".

Christmas and New Year’s were his favorite holidays. He always looked forward to a "Parranda" coming to the house. As kids it was neat listening to people asking you to open the door at 2am playing music, I guess that why Tony began to learn how to play. We always knew that we would be visited so my dad and mom were always ready with cheese, crackers, beer, rum, and don't forget the lemon. We loved visiting all the different houses and listening to Vitin, Tony, Nelson, Tio Felo, and my dad playing guitar and singing.  Then on Dia De Los Reyes we would dance the night away. That was my father. Always opening his doors and always with family.

He was a godfather to many and a favorite Tio to others, but to me he was my papi. He gave me life and was there through the good and bad. My papi who walked me down the aisle. I can still hear him asking Chico, “Once you marry her, she is your problem. You sure you can handle it?” I was blessed again when 25 years later he walked me again to renew my vows with Chico.

He was a grandfather to Tony's son and to my children. He was a great guelo to my, granddaughters who will truly miss him. I thank god for allowing me to be your daughter for 50 years with no regrets. I hope that I continue to make you proud. Give Mom and Tony a kiss from me. Until we see each other again know that I am glad you are not suffering anymore and how much I love you.
