When it comes to Sunday dinner, what do you think of? Meat and potatoes, baked ziti, roasted chicken? Well, for our family, Sunday dinner consist of dim sum. For those not from New York or California, crispy shredded beef, soup dumplings (Xiaolongbao), king crab and pecking duck could seem odd for a Sunday tradition, but for us, it’s the norm.
Moving from NYC to San Francisco, one of our first priorities was finding the restaurant with the BEST dumplings that made us feel like home. Since our new home was the gateway of the pacific, the list was long and the number of restaurants was wide. After some extensive research that added 2-3 inches to our waste line (well Sean’s, not mine), we stumbled upon Hong Kong Lounge 2 in the Richmond District of San Francisco.
From the minute we walked into Hong Kong Lounge 2, we knew we found our happy place.
As you walk into the restaurant, the peach wall color immediately catches your attention. Is this an 80s motif? Who knows, but as you peer over the dining room and you see the piping hot food being shuttled from the kitchen like its Henry Ford’s assembly line, the sense of hunger overtakes your senses.
Food is ushered onto the white linen tablecloths of the diners and their families ready to indulge on the salty goodness that graces their tables.
Orchestrating this magnificent performance, the owner Annie Ho, like the maestro at the symphony, conducts her team to ensure perfection at every point.
You are immediately greeted by the staff with smiles from ear to ear, knowing your name, drink and order, including what is best coming out of the kitchen that day.
Sadly, today’s fire changed all that…
Today, we lost that home. The dining room that made you feel like you were in Annie's home eating what she feed you is now forever gone, victim of a broken gas line in a city bursting at the seams.
In today’s world of the newest and the best, it’s the little things that can really matter and leave a personal impression.
The shiniest glass box with tweezer food may get the most attention, but it isn’t always the most satisfying. The personal touch, the family feel, and the last minute “we can squeeze you in” are what kept us coming back time and time again.
Today, we lost a jewel, one that may never be back again. Our hope is that that we can come together as a community to support the hard-working staff on this Chinese New Year, who’s lives have been ripped apart by uncertainty and ambiguity.
My family wants the staff and community to know that you opened your doors to us as we were new to San Francisco, and we want to be there in this time of pain.
As we overcome this tragedy, we look forward to getting Hong Kong Lounge 2 back on its feet, opening its doors to all the arrivals, with the warmth, grace, and dignity they have shown so many people before us, in that special peach colored dining room.
