Home for Maksim Doe

Maksim Doe is a popular member of the senior class at Watertown High School, who has worked hard toward his goal of graduating in June 2017.  His has been an unusually difficult path.  Maksim was long ago diagnosed with autism, which has made every step of his academic progress a great challenge and a great accomplishment.  With considerable expert assistance from the Watertown school system and support from family and the larger community, Maksim has made spectacular progress.

Maksim is a proud naturalized U.S. citizen who arrived in Massachusetts from Russia with his mother when he was only six years old.  His limited verbal abilities were in Russian only.  When his mother remarried here in Massachusetts, she and Maksim looked forward to greater stability and support.  Maksim’s stepfather, however, was horribly abusive toward Maksim and his mother.  She sought protection for herself and Maksim through restraining orders and filing for divorce against Maksim’s stepfather.  After two years of litigation, a judge issued a divorce granting Maksim’s mother a share of the marital assets in early June 2016.  Three weeks later, on June 30, 2016, Maksim’s mother, the most important person in his life, took her own life.  

The day after Maksim’s mother died, his maternal grandmother rushed to Watertown from Russia.  She left her home and her job.  She has no income and is not permitted to work.  She has been living with Maksim and caring for him since her daughter’s death.  Maksim’s only income is $900 per month in social security benefits as his mother’s surviving child.  Because Maksim and his grandmother have not been able to pay rent, the landlord for the apartment where Maksim and his mother had lived for ten years started an eviction against Maksim.  The eviction court dismissed the case for technical reasons, but the landlord filed a new eviction, which is going on right now.  

Two of the keys to Maksim’s success in school, both academically and socially, are that he lives within walking distance of the school and that he has been able to remain in a home and community that are thoroughly familiar to him.  Despite all that he has been through, his routines have been consistent, and he has been both enthusiastic and forward-looking toward graduation.  

If Maksim is evicted he and his grandmother will be placed in the state shelter system, and that could mean placement anywhere in the state. His routines would be upended.  The final lap of his long, arduous race toward graduation would be disrupted, and his once promising future would be in doubt.   

Maksim’s landlord would likely allow him to remain in his apartment through the end of the school year in June if Maksim and his grandmother were to pay the landlord $2000 per month.  For January through June, this would mean $12,000, and it could mean all the difference in the world for this remarkably resilient young man.  

Знакомьтесь, это Максим. Он учится в 12 классе Watertown High school и в мае должен был бы закончить школу. Но все пошло наперекосяк: в июне прошлого года не стало мамы. Уже полгода Максим живет без нее. Непривычные чужие лица, множество незнакомых  людей, необычных действий, вновь ниоткуда возникший отчим... И  мамина могила.  Да, конечно, бабушка Нина. Бабушка, бросившая в Москве мужа, дом и работу, примчавшаяся сюда, в Бостон, на помощь.

Максим – аутист. Но он умеет медленно писать обеими руками: с левой стороны листа – левой рукой, а с середины до конца строки – правой; говорить, правда иногда  сбивчиво и путанно, особенно когда волнуется. Может даже говорить по-русски – он приехал в Штаты из Москвы в 6 лет. Максим здесь вырос, получил гражданство и любит свою школу, город и страну,  которая стала родной. Но больше всего Максим любит  играть в  американский футбол. Футбол – это его стихия. Этим своим увлечением он обязан школе – именно тут под руководством тренеров и учителей он начал спортивную карьеру. Максим гордится своими достижениями, у него есть друзья, знакомые, товарищи по команде. В школе вообще хорошо: все знакомо, все свои. Тут он знает, как себя вести,  что и когда делать.

В этом мае он должен был бы закончить школу, получить аттестат, к которому так долго и тяжело шел. Но вероятно, этого не случится: хозяин дома, где живут Максим с бабушкой Ниной  вот-вот выселит их за неуплату аренды. У Максима есть пенсия – мама успела заработать;  900 долларов в месяц. Еще есть фудстэмпы. Только всего этого не хватает, чтобы платить аренду. Мамины накопления прибирает к рукам отчим – развод не считается состоявшимся из-за смерти одной из сторон. Найденные нами замечательные бесплатные адвокаты делают все возможное, чтобы протянуть, выиграть время, однако хозяин квартиры неумолимо открывает один процесс за другим, добиваясь выселения.  

Максим стоит  на очереди на субсидированное жилье, однако самая короткая очередь занимает как минимум 2 года. Конечно, его не оставят на улице:  они с бабушкой будут выселены в убежище для бездомных. Но вот доучиться в этом случае ему не удастся, и с футболом тоже придется расстаться, потому что убежище может быть расположено в любом конце штата, отнюдь не рядом со школой. Другая школа – не выход, аутисты тяжело меняют привычную среду.

Наша цель - собрать денег, чтобы дать возможность Максиму жить рядом со школой и все-таки закончить ее в июне. Нужно  12 тысяч долларов.
