Help Our Production Come Alive

Donation protected
The Hooker Monologues  project is a creative, theatrical platform for experiential people and allies to share our experiences in and with the sex industry and for our voices to be heard on our own terms.

Our next set of performances are scheduled at the Firehall Arts Centre from June 13/17 through to June 17/17, with two matinees for a total of seven shows. A PWYC (pay what you can showing) which is first come, first serve with a limited numbers of seats available at the door will also be an option.

Tickets for the shows are available here .

Our stories spring from the entire spectrum of sex work. This is our world; we will share our stories with you,  showing all that sex work is and can be. Our work was the feature of a CBC 's The National, documentary that won a Webster Award for 2015

Sex workers have a history and a culture fashioned from an outsider perspective and marked by resistance and hope.

We are bringing you tried and true monologues from the original show peppered with new stories. A show that sold out all 6 performances, before we even got to stage. The show proved to be wildly popular with write-ups appearing in newspapers across the country, online, and radio.

All monologues are performed by members of our collective.

Now is the time to undertake such a production, as Canada’s new sex work legislation, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act (PCEPA), has reduced sex workers’ freedom and human rights. We believe that through our production, community members, sex workers and allies will be transformed.

The campaign  originally began in August 29, 2015, but did not officially launch till December 2015 to iron out the logistics of the fund raising efforts. What we were able to raise in that year helped us get closer to stage, providing us with a most valuable learning experience.

This new campaign for 2017 is why WE, are asking for is YOUR help in raising $15 000 for our production. This is a production that will need the services of creative and legal advisors, website development, the creation of popular advertising and media distribution. In addition we'll need to secure, rehearsal space, lighting and sound technicians, equipment,  and with the hope of wardrobe, makeup and hair.

What you as a contributor will help to do is promote social transformation of sex workers in the minds of the public and those unfamiliar with sex work through the arts. While there has always been a strong focus on the population of sex workers who are street based, we wish to point out that it is a much broader community that reaches far and wide through all communities.

Communities of various forms of sex work unified by the high levels of “whore stigma” that persist. Sex workers need a creative outlet through which to share their truths that include both serious and humorous lessons to improve their interactional experiences the general population. It is timely to undertake such a production now as the newly enacted legislation has begun to reduce their opportunities to engage with social supports.

The Hooker Monologues project provides a mechanism for sex workers’ unmediated stories and creates opportunities for them to speak to the injustices that threaten their safety and limit their access to the rights and services available to other Vancouver residents.  We believe that through this production, community members, sex workers and allies will be transformed.
