Hispatext, diversity @ Burning Man

Spanish is the second most spoken language at Black Rock City, according the the CENSUS. However there no art installations on the Playa that use Spanish as its language.

We want Hispanic burners to feel represented and surprised when they find in the middle of the desert some words in Spanish floating on the air. Music triggers some of the our  most fond memories and hundreds of burners participates in an online poll to select the most representative songs from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Also we want to expose burners from all over the world to a very siginificant part of our culture:  MUSIC.  Trigger conversations amogn those who understand the lyrics and those who want to find out their meaning. Was it part of your childhood? Did your grandma sing that song while cooking saturdays lunch? We don´t know, but we do know it will touch every hispanic burner somehow.

We were honored to receive a grant from Burning Man and be part of the Black Rock Arts Honoraria 2017. This grant helped us pay for a significan part of the materials needed to create Hispatext. But we need to get it to the US along with the team that will make it happen.

But what  Hispatext will look like?
Hispatext will consist of a monolith place in deep playa, created using a molecular building system designed by one of our team members. This structure will hold 133 EL panels that will light up the lyrics at night.

At night the installation will be randomly showing words in spanish and playing randomly selected songs.

However when a burner select one of the songs on a podimums just meters away, hispatext will show that song´s lyrics and play the full song.

Who´s building Hispatex
We´re a group of burners from Argentina and other countries from Latin America that´s been participating as far as since 2011. We´re engaged in the local Regional Burn and  we´ve been contribuiting to Burning Man at Black Rock City as a theme camp since 2014. This is  the first time an Art installation from Argentina receives a Black Rock Arts Honoraria.

Gauchos del Fuego 2014
It was the first time we had an installation as part of the Regional Network at the Souk on the base of the Man. We served mates everyday, gifted hundreds of mate kits and teached burners how to prepare this typical brew from Argentina.

Gauchos del Fuego 2015

We´ve served mates everymorning at our camp and participates of the Midway collaborationg with the North Bay Regional, China Regional and Saskatchewan Regional on the Sask Playa odditorium

Gauchos del Fuego 2016
We oranized and provided support to the Guildsville, the village at Black Rock City that hosted all the workshops that were at the based of the Man. hold the Gaucho Partuza and organized the Latin American Burners Meet up at Everywhere.

Help us achieve our dream...
Let´s build bridges instead of walls!
We have 10,000 kilometers to get to Reno, NV and set up the installation and make sure everything works as expected before heading to Black Rock City.

That means we have to arrive at least one week before the event opens to complete the project on time.   We need to pay for our stay at Reno, car rental to move aroudn and buy the material we need, rent a truck to get everything to BRC, buy some tools, batteries (we are using solar power).

But not only the distance is an issue... Argentina´s been hit by high inflation, as high as 40% in the last two years, making it very hard for some of us to pay our way to BRC, we are helping some members of the team to fund their trip to experience Burning Man and help us spread the word and grow our local community and Regional Burn: Fuego Austral (check it out!!!) .
