*UPDATE 8/21/2000: We are all so incredibly heartbroken. Angel lost his fight with cancer yesterday afternoon. Hepassed away peacefully at 4:28pm in the arms of his wife and son. We're leaving the fundraiser open to help with any outstanding medical costs and upcoming burial costs. From the bottom of my heart, I'd to thank everyone for their support.
*UPDATE 08/15/2000: Thank you so much to everyone who has shared the fundraiser, donated and/or has said prayers for Angel and Debbie. You might have noticed that I just raised the goal to $75,000. Let's keep this going!! This is going to a tough fight and the average cancer cost can be well over 100,000. Let's help Angel focus on beating cancer and not worry about how to pay for the medical care.. Thank you again for your help!
** UPDATE** I'm just overwhelmed by the support that everyone is giving Angel!
I talked to Debbie today and found out that there first hospital bill came in for 7,000 and that is not including doctor's time, lab or test costs.
After doing a bit more research, I found that the average cancer care cost is > 150,000, and out of pocket expenses vary depending on insurance coverage. So I decided to raise the goal to $40,000.
You might have heard that Angel Figueroa was diagnosed in June 2020 with stage 4 bile duct cancer/cholangiocarcinoma. He is in the process of receiving chemotherapy treatments and is doing well. In order to show love and support from his family of dancers, we thought we would initiate a fundraiser to help offset the Figueroa family’s out-of-pocket medical expenses and other living expenses. As we know, chemotherapy can be effective, but medical expenses often lead to serious financial problems.
This fundraiser is very important to us because Angel is the cornerstone of the Austin West Coast Swing community and his reputation is known across the United States. And even though Angel will still be teaching, coaching, and head judging, with this pandemic, it's unlikely that Angel will be able to teach, coach and perform head judging at the same rate as normal. It would be great if we could pool resources and help the Figueroa's offset expenses which insurance won't cover - like prescriptions, medical deductibles, expensive chemotherapy treatments, ect..
Angel and Debbie are so encouraged by the support they have already received, but maybe we can send some positive encouragement by reaching a fundraising goal of $15,000.
