Keeping University Pharmacy open

The goal for this campaign is to allow continuous health care access for the patients and students of our community. Maria has always put great emphasis on education for both students and patients. When patients are more educated on their conditions and medications they are more empowered to make better choices in their lives. This also translates to her position in the medical student community. She empowers students by allowing them to apply their knowledge in pharmacy practice and gain independence that we can apply to our careers later on. No matter the location of University Pharmacy her vision, of bridging the gap between physicians and patients, will continue.

University Pharmacy is a family-oriented and patient-centered independent pharmacy located in the heart of Detroit, Michigan at WSU. The campus provides access to over 27,000 students and over 5,000 faculty members. The pharmacy does more than just dispense pills.  University Pharmacy continues to be involved in multiple innovative pharmacy services and has performed over 15,000 biometric screenings, 5,000 point of care tests, involved in over 550 chronic disease management, and countless immunizations annually. Some of the services they offer are medication therapy, tuberculosis testing, diabetes management, smoking cessation, cholesterol testing, immunizations, and HIV Testing. 

Building lasting relationships and trust for the pharmacist role in healthcare has been one of the biggest hurdles to pharmacy practice. Since University Pharmacy established in 2008, WSU has had four Presidents and three Provosts while the Pharmacy School has had four Deans. There has been a lack in continuity in leadership leading to a disconnect and misunderstandings between University Pharmacy and WSU.  In 2010, the pharmacy started to offer HIV testing.  WSU believes that the progressive services we offer, like HIV testing, is a liability to the University.  University Pharmacy has disrupted the system so much that WSU decided to cancel the lease agreement.

We must find a way to move past our outdated way of thinking, and be innovative in implementing new opportunities in which pharmacists can add benefit to the role of physicians and other healthcare providers. University Pharmacy clearly plays a vital role in the community, and therefore we ask you for your support in helping University Pharmacy continue to serve the community.
