Hillary Barnard College Prep Help

Dreams are made achievable by our actions, effort, and willingness to overcome obstacles in spite of very challenging circumstances. These are the words we preach to our students and why our community of educators is seeking your support today. We are advocating on behalf of Hillary Ramirez Perez, currently an 11th grade junior attending The International High School at Prospect Heights in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Hillary was just accepted to the prestigious and extremely competitive Barnard College (Summer in the City) Pre-College Program. This is a potentially life changing opportunity for her academic and personal growth, but there is one obstacle she faces with this program: the $4,795 tuition fee necessary to attend. However, this newest obstacle has not deterred Hillary and will not deter our community. We wholeheartedly believe she can succeed in this Barnard College Summer Program and very much want her to attend because it will be another crucial step in her journey to be first person in her family to attend college, where she aspires to major in architecture. So now let us share a little information about Hillary to justify your investment in her future.

Hillary was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the United States in 2014 when she was 13 years old. When she arrived her English language skills were very basic: “Hello”, “he, she, they” and other fundamental words made up her entire English vocabulary. At the time her family received support from a community center where she spent many afternoons after middle school classes finished. Hillary participated in any program and activity that was available to develop her language skills: art classes, drama classes, homework tutoring, and self-defense. She spent hours in the library devouring books and would read any book she was given in the community center. Once Hillary moved onto to high school, she took advantage of every extracurricular opportunity and program available as well as being fully dedicated to her studies. She has become a strong leader in her school cohort and some examples include being president of our chapter of the National Honor Society, a representative in our Student Government, a leader of the Latino Club, a leader of the Dream Team, and a community wide advocate. Hillary embodies the our International school spirit of compassion and collaboration. Our school serves students from over 20 countries, so beyond supporting several Spanish speaking students in her classes on a daily basis, she continuously interacts positively with the diverse population of young learners in our school community, regardless of language, religious affiliation, or cultural beliefs.

Moreover, Hillary has participated in numerous extracurricular activities outside of school including the Youth Insights Teen Program at The Whitney Museum and completing the Art 100 college course at Medgar Evers College. She is driven and relentless in pursuit of her future academic and professional goals while simultaneously supporting numerous classmates with their academic work. Our school community would not function without students like Hillary. She commutes over one hour each way to attend our school and supports her single mother in caring for her two younger brothers. Her commitment is undeniable.

This is why it is imperative that we support Hillary financially to participate in the Barnard College (Summer in the City) Pre-College Program. Too often financial barriers prevent low-income students from participating in these excellent academic programs. This is an opportunity to validate Hillary’s belief that she belongs in elite academic settings as well as a chance for Barnard College to encounter an intellectually curious, socially conscious individual with a complex, multicultural identity.

New York City features one of the most segregated educational systems in the country. That is why your financial donations will support not only Hillary Ramirez Perez’s dreams, but serve as an individual act of social justice in overcoming socio-economic circumstances and boundaries.

Your immediate donation is necessary because the deadline for Hillary’s tuition payment is Friday, June 8th, 2018. We guarantee that this investment will have a lasting impact not only for an individual, but for the greater community in the future. Please DONATE NOW!! Thank You!
