I am a midwife currently volunteering in Uganda. During my time here I have seen a huge need for accessibility to pregnancy ultrasound scanning in reducing maternal and infant mortality. I want to raise the money to buy a portable ultrasound machine for Amani Family Centre, a small birth centre in Kanyogoga slum in Kampala Uganda. This will enable ALL mothers to receive a scan at least once during pregnancy, helping to identify higher risk mothers such as multiple pregnancy, fetal abnormalities, clarification of correct dates and malpresentations.....to name a few., thus enabling timely transfer to hospital for delivery and obstetric care. This little lady low recently lost her twin brother during an undiagnosed twin pregnancy birth where not only was he undiscovered until the first baby was born but also he was in a position not conducive to normal birth and sadly died before birth. Early scanning would have identified this high risk and allowed for transfer to hospital for planned twin delivery .
