The HGCSF was founded in 2011, to honor the memory of Helen Gee Chin, wife of Sifu Chin of Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy, Inc.   Simo was the administrator at CCMAA for 15 years and was involved with preserving the history and promoting the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. She was beloved by her husband, the students of the Academy that she ran with him, and by the martial arts community as a whole. The Foundation is devoted to offering college scholarships to encourage academic achievement and motivate individuals to become serious students of the Chinese martial arts.

With this unique mission, in just four years the HGCSF has become a landmark within the US Chinese martial arts community.  During this short period of time, already over $50,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to 22 individuals, from places like California, Ohio, and Maryland, to attend college at institutions like Berkeley, Boston College, and Case Western to name just a few.  This group of young men and women includes international wu shu medalists, International traditional Kung fu , and Tai Chi Champions.  The same characteristics of focus, determination, and hard work that helped them reach such heights within the martial arts are now being turned, with the help of their HGCSF scholarships, towards the goals of becoming doctors, scientists, and future community leaders.

While we have been both pleased with this success and humbled by the help and support of so many in making it possible, to truly honor Simo Helen we would like to see scholarships awarded for years to come.  Towards that end, we have set as our goal to raise $150,000 by June, 2016.  Together with the nearly $200,000 we have already raised the past four years, through a combination of silent fund raising and our annual HGCSF Fundraiser Open House performance, reaching this financial goal would allow us to create an endowed fund permitting the award of 6-8 scholarships per year in perpetuity.

Thank you for any help you can provide us in achieving our goal of creating a fully-endowed fund for the HGCSF.  With 2016 being the fifth anniversary of the HGCSF, the 20th anniversary of the CCMAA school Simo Helen helped found with her husband, Sifu Calvin Chin, and the 45th anniversary of hung kuen martial arts (the lineage taught at CCMAA) on the US East Coast, it would be especially meaningful and auspicious to succeed in this fundraising effort.
