On behalf of Herman "Sport" Wesley and his family (wife Jenna, 2 year old daughter Braylee and newborn Bryson), here is his story in hopes of raising awareness of multiple myeloma and helping him fight this cancer.

Around the middle of April, Sport began feeling tired constantly.  On Monday, May 6, 2019, his wife Jenna gave birth to their second child, Bryson.  Sport was very sick at this point and scheduled a doctors appointment for the next day.  The doctors diagnosed him with acute bronchitis.  By Friday, May 10, 2019, he still wasn't feeling well and Jenna convinced him to call the doctor back.  They prescribed additional antibiotics.  Monday, May 13, 2019, he went back to the doctor who ordered x-rays to check his chest for the coughing.  Those came back clear.  His labs showed some blood in his urine.  At this point, Sport was experiencing severe pain in his lower back, knees, and thighs.  Wednesday, May 15, 2019, he received a CAT scan in the morning.  That afternoon he received a phone call from Central Baptist that his kidneys were failing and he needed to check in at Central Baptist immediately.

Countless tests were run until it was confirmed on Sunday, May 19, 2019 that Sport had multiple myeloma cancer, which is a rare cancer whose causes are unknown.  Based on his age and otherwise good health, doctors believe he has an excellent chance of full recovery, but there is a long road ahead.  Since determining the diagnosis, Sport has been receiving chemo, plasmapheresis treatments and oral prescriptions to fight the cancer.  Plasmapheresis treatments are given via a catheter that was inserted in his chest; these treatments remove the bad plasma antibodies and replace with good ones.  He has also received a blood transfusion to increase his blood cell counts.

He was able to check-out of the hospital on Wednesday, May 22 as an out-patient who would continue to come in for treatments and follow-ups.

While Sport has been sick, there has been a persistent cough that has not gone away.  The night of Wednesday, May 29, he was up coughing all night and was losing his breath.  He checked into the emergency room on Thursday, May 30 and was diagnosed with pneumonia.  While his body is fighting the pneumonia, the chemo has been put on hold until the pneumonia is gone.

Sport and his family need all of the prayers and support they can get. Any kind words and/or donations to Sport's fight against cancer will be so greatly appreciated.  All donations will go directly to medical expenses. In the coming weeks, we will keep you updated on Sport’s progress.
