Help the Refugees in Chios Appeal

Hello friends, colleagues and family (and anyone else who's interested in finding out about our fundraising cause)
You would have heard or read in the news about the ongoing civil war in Syria which has displaced approximately 12 million Syrians from their homes. This has caused many to flee to neighbouring countries and overseas, including Greece, to seek refuge from the dangers and violence of the conflicts.* Sadly, this is one of the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time.
My friend, Carol, and I want to make a positive contribution towards the lives of the people affected by this crisis. We will be travelling to the Greek Island of Chios in February 2017 and will be volunteering full-time for two weeks with A Drop in the Ocean**. A Drop in the Ocean is a Norwegian non-profit humanitarian organisation which provides aid to refugees, especially women and children. Some of the volunteer tasks include food distribution to approximately 850 refugees at the Souda refugee camp, organising activities for the children (eg: reading, drawing) and sorting and packing clothes for the refugees in the warehouse. This will be a trip of firsts for us - first time travelling to Greece, first time volunteering with A Drop in the Ocean and first time helping at a refugee camp.
In addition to volunteering our time, we are also fundraising for our refugee friends and would like to appeal to you to make a donation. Any amount will make a difference to their lives. For example, AUD$4 typically spent on a cup of coffee could go towards the purchase of a tooth brush and toothpaste for someone in need of such basic essentials. We intend to use the fundraised money to purchase various essential non-food items for our refugee friends (eg: clothes, educational/art material for the kids, headlamps, footwear - whatever is urgently needed by them). If you have a special request for how you would like your donation to be used, please let us know and we'll do our best to make it possible. Any remaining funds will be donated to A Drop in the Ocean so they can continue with their dedicated work in refugee aid. To be transparent, all money fundraised (less fees charged by the Go Fund Me site) will go towards helping our refugee friends in Chios and/ A Drop in the Ocean. Our flights to Greece from Australia, accommodation and living expenses while there will be fully self-funded.
