(Summary: I am trying to pay my way through a coding bootcamp to work in a field that I've been passionate about my entire life, would give me stability and purpose, and would give me the means to give back. Thank you.)
After slugging through college, volunteering abroad, and doing a lot of soul-searching, I've realized what I truly want to pursue in life: programming.
I still remember the years late nights in middle school I spent toiling away my own MySpace layouts and designs, teaching myself coding along the way. I was always the computer whiz kid growing up, jumping at the opportunity to solve people’s technological problems. I've always had an affinity for computers and programming, but never the opportunity to pursue it full time.
More than just a rapidly developing field, programming would enable me to express my creativity and, even more importantly, serve those generally underserved by large corporate companies, on a global level. I'm not looking to lock myself into a high-paying desk job and lose contact with the real world. I have always strived to consider how I can make a positive impact on others, and this is no exception.
I've already been accepted to a school in San Francisco, called App Academy, to help me get started on a career in web and software development. It starts in February.
The main reason I'm doing this program is the tuition deferral--I don't need to pay most of the tuition until after I get a job! However, I need to pay for living expenses for about 6 months.
Of course, I'm working on other ways to get and save money: working, extreme budgeting, CouchSurfing, and applying for loans and credit cards.
However, that's still not enough.
I'm not one to ask for money from others. I know how many other people in the world need this money more than I do. However, going to this program will land me a career where I can pay your donations forward--to important causes and charities, to issues the world is facing.... I'm even considering creating a scholarship fund for future adults in my current position. None of this could be realized, however, without your support.
I'm also ready to earn my money the hard way. Need to do some data entry, learn a language, or figure out how to travel on a dime? I can help with that. Need anything else? Ask and I might be of service!
Your money will be going directly to basic necessities:
- moving and relocation fees (~$500)
- monthly rent (~$1000 per month + security deposit)
- food (~$300 per month)
- transportation (~$100 per month)
- other monthly payments (~$100 per month)
It may seem like a simple $5 donation won't make much of a difference, but trust me, it will. Even with a lofty goal of thousands of dollars, every penny counts.
You have no idea what this would mean to me if I could attend this program. I've never been in a truly stable financial situation, and I've never been able to fully invest my energy and attention into a project that genuinely excites me. This program would not only pave my way to a stable career, but would also empower me to use my newfound skills and financial stability to help others.
