Jonathon Parrish's critical-care medical bills

$14,870 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 275 people in 27 days
Created April 24, 2019
A little after 8pm on Monday, April 22nd, a drunk driver struck and critically injured Jonathon Parrish as he was biking in southeast Urbana. The driver fled the scene but was luckily identified by a 911-calling nurse, who then turned her attention to saving Jon's life. His injuries were extensive and he was lucky to survive, thanks to those on the scene and first responders. The driver was subsequently arrested (now out on bail).

Jon had just started a new job and is currently without medical insurance. Obviously in this case he shouldn't be paying for anything, but we know how the system works. On top of normal bills that won't wait, the added expenses of a hospital stay can be immense. And without his own insurance to cover costs as they arise (and seek damages), this is going to be quite a challenge.

This is all in the very early stages and there's no way to tell how high the expenses might get, how long the work stoppage could be, or what other monies will suddenly be needed. People have been very kind to want to very quickly mobilize and donate, so this GFM is going to serve as a place to make donations for all of these sudden expenses and bridge Jon and his family through this time. If circumstances change and we need to up the goal or refocus, we'll cross that bridge as it comes. The need really isn't going to go away.

In addition, several local musicians, venues, promoters, and fans are all working on some events where local donations and support can be offered. Jon is one of us, and--along with Therese--has made Mid-October one of the brightest spots in the Champaign-Urbana music scene. We all do what we can to support our peers. I'll post updates about events to this page.

It's very important to understand that you're donating to help them get through this tumultuous time. Any little bit helps. Some time down the road he may see some justice, but GoFundMe is unfortunately how we fund health care for far too many people. If you're strapped and can't donate any money but still want to help, there are other things that are needed! Maybe rides or food drops. Or...
If you're reading this and you'd like to donate your time and energy, please email Therese_brown75@yahoo.com so she can get this organized.

For anyone who has been wanting to see Jon in person, the plan is for he and Therese to attend this event tonight (5:30-7:30) and potentially even try to perform a song. Broadway Food Hall has great food and is kid friendly. Keep in mind that hugs/pats need to be real delicate.

I stopped by Jon's room today to catch up and see how his spirits were. He's stuck in a hospital bed with no end date in sight, so of course that's very frustrating. He also hates having to lean on other people so much and is having to learn how to be more accepting of it because this recovery is going to be lengthy and he's going to need a lot of help. Despite all of this, he's trying to stay positive. Knowing how many people had donated from near and far, some who knew him and some who didn't, and seeing some of the messages y'all had left for him: It all seemed to give him a major boost.

We talked about what the road ahead looks like and how expensive this is all going to be for him. I mentioned to him that I had been polling people as to whether it would seem odd to bump up the goal amount--whether it might seem exploitative--since all signs point to this being way more expensive than we all thought (and the $10k was just an arbitrary number). It's at about 50/50 on whether I should or not. We don't want people to feel the need to donate more than they have, but new people seeing it might think we're all good. So if anyone has an opinion and wants to comment...

We also got him all set up to be the one withdrawing money from this campaign so that all of your amazing kindness can get right to work. Those bills don't stop when you are critically injured by a drunk driver.

Mostly I just wanted to let y'all know how appreciative he is and how great he thinks your messages are. The more the better.

We cracked the $10k goal. That is overwhelming. Having seen both the local music scene and the larger cycling scene both rally to this cause is really inspiring.

The $10k was a relatively arbitrary number--knowing that likely no matter what we raise likely won't be enough but not wanting it to seem unattainable--so please keep on sharing if you are so inclined.

Update from Therese about the packing/moving, as promised. Obviously most people here have donated money and that is amazing, so this isn't an additional ask unless you just happen to be available or willing.

----------------------------------------------
Friday at 5[pm] meet at 1616 Ivanhoe way, urbana

Mostly packing needs to be done, and Dan Orchard will have his 4’ x 8’ utility trailer. From what I remember nothing is really packed and I think there is a desk, washer, dryer, and a table that needs to be moved as the “large” items. I’m not sure how much is left exactly because I know his roommates moved out today as well.

I have a few Tupperware boxes, but will probs need some more packing boxes.

If it starts getting late:

Saturday around noon we can start with the rest! It will kind of help avoid the marathon too.

Please take everything from 1616 Ivanhoe way to 1004 e Mumford dr.
