Helping Northern Peru: Viru
Donation protected
Peru is experiencing intense flooding and mudslides caused by El Nino phenomenon. About 24 regions have been declared in state of emergency. Roads and and highways are completely blocked and or destroyed. At least 70 people have died and more than 70,000 have become homeless.
Viru, La Libertad (approx. 20,000 inhabitants) was our home for two years during our Peace Corps service and they welcomed us with arms wide open. The community took us in as one of their own and they always sought to make sure that we felt confortable and welcome. 3 days ago the only bridge that connects our site to the regional capital collapsed and the entire province became isolated. Most of the site has no access to clean water, the majority of houses have fallen down and the price of food has quadrupled. Due to the standing water from the floods; there is also a concern for mosquito borne diseases such as Dengue and Zika.
We are now asking to please help us help them with the effects of this dreadful and shocking phenomenon.
They are in need of funding to purchase:
-Non -perishable foods (Canned and dry goods)
-Bottled water
-Diapers
-Feminine Products
-Blankets
-Repelent
-Medicine and First Aid supplies.
Current currency exchange $1= 3.25 Peruvian Soles
Your dollar goes along way :)
The funds will be transfered via Western Union (They unfortunately do not own bank accounts ) to trusted community members including our host families who will be buying and transporting the supplies.
