Gabriella Matlak is a spunky four-year-old girl. Like any little girl, she loves to dance, sing, and play with her dollies. She loves spending time with her brother and sister and is always willing to help no matter the situation. This little girl will put a smile on your face the moment she greets you and I am one of the million that are so blessed to have her in my life.

On June 7th, 2019, while at a friend’s house my niece Gabriella, had an accident and fell into a pool. As her dad, Tim and friend, Charley were able to remove her from the pool, they immediately started to perform CPR. Unfortunately, Gabby was not breathing and was transported to St Joes. Upon arriving to St Joes, it was decided that she was too critical and needed to be airlifted to Lurie Children’s Hospital. Gabby is currently in critical condition and fighting as hard as her little body can but at this time her brain has put herself into a coma. Gabby is currently going through multiple tests and being watched at all times. Gabby’s parents have been told that she is having seizures which is causing harm to her brain. The next few hours are going to be very critical for our little girl and this is where you come into the picture. Tim and Paula work hard to provide for their family and as this time is spent in the ICU; Gabby’s parents are unable to work. Gabby’s siblings will need consistent 24/7 care as we all take part in caring for Alex (6) and Lilly (2) and as everyone would suspect, being with Gabby during this difficult is very important. We ask that if you have anything at all that you can donate, it would help the Matlak family so much. We understand that not everyone is able to donate, and all that we ask is if you can send big prayers to our Gabby.

Every little bit is appreciated.

Thank you,

Becca Matlak - Hodges

We would like to thank family, friends, and community for be such amazing support system while we’re here with Gabby. Tim and Paula were able to leave the hospital yesterday and come back home for a bit and it was amazing to see Lockport coming together with all the pink ribbons and Go Pink for Gabby signs at the local businesses. We love you Lockport. Doctors told us Gabby did really good with then pressure support test once again and lasted from 8 am until 1045 pm. Everything is lining up with taking her tube out tomorrow. With that being said she does have her throat swollen and will be needing antibiotics so she’s all ready for tomorrow. If they do not feel comfortable where she stands tomorrow than they will not perform it. She’s also been very sensitive and moving her hands and legs today. When’s she’s mad everyone knows it!! Keep the prayers going and thank you again to everyone.❤️❤️. #gopinkforgabby.

Gabby had a really good night. They tested her again to see if she can breathe on her own and passed with flying colors. Today’s big test is that they took her off the pressure support again but will let her go as long as she can and than stop after 12 hours. Go Gabby Go! She has no seizure activity which is a very good thing. This means her brain is getting that time to heal and come back to us. One step at a time and she’s showing us new things daily! Love our little princess so much and can’t wait for the day to get her home again.

We had a meeting with the care team that involved the neurologist, pediatrician and other staff members that been working closely with Gabby and her healing process. They don’t have all the answers but did let us know that Gabby may not be the same and will be facing neurological issues. We don’t know what they’ll be because there hasn’t been enough time to get a better understanding where she sits. They did mention though that the next big step for them would be taking Gabby off the ventilator and seeing how she does with not being supported by the machine. Breathing is such an important but a basic function, we need to see how she’ll do with that. We don’t have a time frame when that’ll occur and they won’t push us until we feel confident with our decision. She has also been seizure free for the last few days and has been showing small signs of reacting to some of the doctors tests. For now we just keep asking for prayer and will be spending more time with our Princess and taking it one day at a time. Once again we’re back to the waiting game but we enjoy every minute we get with her.

The last week was difficult we had some scares. Yesterday Gabby showed us how strong she is and that she is a fighter and did things she hasn’t done all week. We don’t know what that means but we think it’s progress. Brain is very complicated so all we can do is give her time and keep praying. Letting her know we are here and not giving up. Mom and dad have been able to hold sweet Gabby girl many times throughout the last few days and she is feeling the love coming off of them. With that being said anything can happen but today our sassy pants is doing all she can to show us she’s listening.
