Help the Canines of Kathmandu

Donation protected
From Mutts of Myanmar to Canines of Kathmandu

I originally set up this page to help the homeless animals that are sick, injured, and/or malnourished in Yangon, Myanmar. With the help of all you amazing donors we were able to get lots of dogs vaccinated and neutered/spayed. We didn't reach our goal, though, so I'm reviving this page for new efforts to save more pups.

I've now moved to Nepal, where the amount of stray dogs solely in Kathmandu is over 30,000. On my street alone I've counted 15 dogs. They are so sweet and often walk me to the bus stop in the morning or follow me and Wauwa on our walks. Since I moved here I've been feeding these doggos and giving them flea/tick medication. I haven't been able to get them neutered/spayed, though, because I don't have a money tree, unfortunately.

Last time I melted your hearts by telling you the backstory of my baby Wauwa. This time I'll paint a picture of the horrors of street dog life by telling you about the neighborhood mom, "no-name":

When I first move here, a scared female dog eyed me suspiciously as I pet the other dogs around. I noticed her because she had some kind of plastic ring around her neck that almost looked like it was strangling her. Over time I tried to lure her and win her trust by feeding her and bringing treats, which worked to a point, but she still wouldn't let me touch her. There were also two puppies in my neighborhood (oh so cute, oh so sad that they don't have a home) and I eventually realized they are her puppies. She fiercely protected them if I came too close when I was feeding them, but eventually realized I'm not a threat and let me pet them as they ate. Now, fast-forward four months and the pups are almost fully grown. Mom, however, has gone missing. I always keep an eye out for her, because she's so scared of humans that I worry she won't get any food, which would rather be given to the happy human-loving strays. A few weeks later, she appeared, digging in a pile of garbage for food scraps - pregnant. It broke my heart. I fed her when I saw her, but she was hiding away during most of her pregnancy. After giving birth I saw her looking so thin, so malnourished, so tired. I fed her and hoped she would come back every day to eat some more. She didn't. She disappeared and I fully believed that she had died. I told my friend about her last weekend; how she's been missing a long time and how she looked so sick and skinny when I last saw her. It was devastating to think she had died and her puppies must have met the same fate.

This morning as I'm walking to the bus stop I saw her! She was skin and bones but she was alive. The plastic ring around her neck, which previously looked like it was really tight, was now dangling. I ran home to get food and when I returned a neighborhood shopkeeper was trying to lure her with bread. When no-name saw me she ran over and started eating the food I poured next to the bread. She had never come this close to me (usually she waited until I backed away) and she ate like she hadn't eaten in months. The shopkeeper shoo'd the other dogs so she could eat in peace. She told me she hadn't seen poor no-name in a long time either, but she knew that she gave birth to five puppies. Where those puppies are, no one knows.

My heart breaks every time I step outside. Although people like this lovely shopkeeper feed them, stray dogs have a miserable life. Every morning when I pet whichever one runs up to me first, the others shove their heads into my hand and beg for a scrtich scrotch behind their ears. Every other day one of them comes hopping on three legs rather than running because they've been hit by some a-hole of a driver. I've cleaned wounds and shown them love, but that's about all I can do without your help.

I ask that this Christmas you give the gift of vaccines, food, and sterilization. Even five bucks can go a long way here.

- A bag of imported dog food: 15 USD
- General health check-up: 5-10 USD
- Spaying/neutering: 50-150 USD
- Vaccinations: 10-20 USD

The first thing I will do is get no-name spayed, so 1) she doesn't have to be the neighborhood pregnancy machine anymore and 2) less pups will be born into these miserable living conditions.

For each donation I will provide an update of how it helped.

If you'd like to donate as a gift in someone else's name, I will send a Card to the person or family in whose name the donation was made.
Under "Your Name" please write the name of the person whose name you want the donation made and under "Your Email" please write your own email, unless you want me to send the card directly to the person. Please also make sure to write your own name in the comments, so that I can include who the gift is from.

Please share this with all your dog-loving friends <3
