Help BOSNIANS stay in BOSNIA

THE STORY

Hello my name is Nedim Pajevic, a Bosnian-American living in California who recently joined my cousin Jasmina Cusic in her movement towards organic farming production. Jasmina is a 31-year-old former English professor who in 2017 began farming organic vegetables in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the intent of creating a job for herself as well as contributing to the local economy. Finding financially sustainable employment was extremely difficult for Jasmina but she made it her personal mission to remain in the country and continue expanding on her vision of promoting a healthy lifestyle for younger generations to come.

With your generous donation, we will grow our land cultivation and overall production of organic fruits and vegetables that will result in hiring individuals who are stricken with poverty along with college students who have a passion for agriculture.

THE FACTS

•         Although Bosnia and Herzegovina have made great strides over the last 10 years on improving the economy, we are trending at 39% unemployment (young adults at 60%) with an 18% poverty rate as the country continues to suffer from the aftermath of the early 1990s civil war.

•         There are at least 2 million people who originate from Bosnia now living abroad (including myself), which is roughly 56.4% of the total population living in the country today.

•         A study commissioned by the EU in 2011 stated that “with proper financial investments, Bosnia can be a global leader in organic produce,” 47% of all land is ideal for agriculture.

THE IDEA

Growing up on her family’s farm, Jasmina’s father always stressed the idea that “clean produce is vital for a healthy life”. Fast forward to summer of 2016 when she realized there was a market for organic produce as majority of the goods sold had been treated with some form of chemicals and/or pesticides; sadly, your average Bosnian farmer is unable to absorb the risks and financial burden associated with organic cultivation.

Today, “Domace Eko Voce I Povrce Jasmina” is a local business in Jasmina's hometown of Mostar that provides seasonal fruits, vegetables and jams harvested on over 20 acres of fertile soil in the Villages of Višići and Nevesinje. Currently, all goods are delivered directly to customers 3x/week who primarily reside in the Southern Herzegovina region. Finally, we are in the process of finalizing the plantation of our own organic orchard (cherries, plums, apples, pears), which will be the first of its kind in all of Bosnia.

THE INVESTMENT

Over the last 2 years our partners have invested over $80,000 and now need your help to provide Jasmina with additional funds that will contribute to her growth over the next 6 months:

•         GREENHOUSES: Construct and assemble 10 greenhouses (5 x 20m size per greenhouse). Each greenhouse costs $2,000 to setup including labor and materials.

•         EMPLOYMENT: Provide employment for 2 seasonal workers who are currently enrolled in either high school or college. Each student will be paid $1,000 for the summer season.

In closing, one of the things we are most proud of is the multiethnic partnerships we’ve developed by working with Bosnians, Croats, Serbians and Americans alike. Aside from the quality of the products as attested by many customers, this is what gives us the most pride today.

HELP US stay in Bosnia. Help us in our journey to bring our people back to our country!
