Medical Fund for Sukkare Debele

Sukkare Debele Korsa is a first year law student at the prestigious School of Law of Addis Ababa University. Sukkare was diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition, medically known as mitral valve stenosis, when she was in 8th grade. Over the years, her heart condition has deteriorated despite all attempts by her family to get her treatments in Ethiopia. In order to pay for Sukkare's treatment, her single mother sold her land in Metta Roobi, West Shawa, in the village of Ganna Eela, where Sukkare was born. She rented a place in Addis Ababa so that Sukkare can receive ongoing treatments in the hospital system of the city.

The treatments have not helped. It has become clear that Sukkare needs to go outside of Ethiopia in order to receive heart surgery. Sukkare has overcome several dream crushing obstacles rural girls face in Ethiopia to get education and is the only one of six in her family to go to the university. Her health condition threatens to cut short her accomplishments and dreams. At this time, Sukkare’s heart condition is ever worsening; she needs a complete heart surgery and she needs one soon.

She has no funds of her own to finance the surgery. She is a daughter of a farmer, a single mom who did all she can yet is unable to go further.
