My name is Yasmine Malone of Clarksdale, MS. I am a junior at The University Of Mississippi studying political science, journalism and public policy.
Like many low-income students deciding to attend university, I knew that I would have to rely mainly on scholarships and grants to afford the costs of living. This year, I have even decreased my involvement with campus organizations so that I am able to dedicate more time to a job. I have been trying to beat the curve as much as I can so that my grades and personal health are not affected negatively, but y’all--it’s hard to do with no computer.
As a student, much of my success is dependent on my access to technology and online resources. School has been in session for almost a month now, and I still do not have a functioning computer.
What this means is that while most of my peers have the advantage of using technology in class, working from home, having study groups, using their e-books, and having more flexible, intermittent work hours-- I do not. In order to work effectively and meet assignment and job deadlines, I have to sit at a desktop on campus after a full day of classes and daily meetings well past midnight most days during the week. Then I wake up the next morning and attempt to get back there before classes resume the next day. This cycle is exhausting. In just three weeks I have had to spend over 60 hours in computer labs that I usually have to drive to use.
I try to prioritize academics over work, but the extra time and energy I have to put into doing my schoolwork without personal technology are difficult, stressful and oftentimes overwhelming. A new computer would allow me to work more comfortably and efficiently. It would lessen the load of completing regular tasks and schoolwork.
The price includes the computer, 3-year warranty, a protective case and software for writing and editing.
