Help with Carmen's Medical Bills & Return Home

Anyone who knows our mom, Carmen Brito, knows that she is the life of the party and a helping hand for all. Her laugh can be heard and recognized by anyone who knows her and anyone who's had the pleasure knows she's the one to go to when you're in a pinch, need advice or a laugh. Everyone knows she's always collecting hand-me-downs and toys for the poor kids of her home town of Mao in DR. For over 10 years, she's been funding and organizing a back-to-school party for over 100 kids in her hometown neighborhood complete with school supplies, candy, food and a live DJ. For her good deeds and lively spirit, she is known as the "Patrona" and now, she needs our help.

This summer, our mom had to undergo surgery for a hernia. Although the surgery went well, she had to travel to the Dominican Republic due to her mother's death.

Soon after she arrived in DR, she began to experience complications because of her surgery. On July 23rd, she was rushed to the 'clinica' and was under the care of ICU doctors. It was determined that she had developed blood clots in her small intestines that required emergency surgery. She underwent surgery on August 4th and remained under intensive care treatment for over two weeks. She was released into the care of her children and returned to her home town of Mao ValVerde where she was receiving medical attention and physical therapy services.

Since her release, we have not seen much improvement in our mother's health. We attempted to fly her to New York but doctors, both in NY and the DR, determined that her health would not sustain the flight back to NY. We waited on her recovery to bring her back to the US, where she would receive treatment and care from her doctors and where she has medical insurance.

As of September 11, 2019, our mother's health has taken a turn for the worse. She was in agony and complaining of the same initial pain that lead her to be hospitalized in July. She was rushed to the clinic and is presenting with the same initial problems: blood clots in her small intestines and now, with the additional complications of pancreatitis, depression and extremely low blood pressure. Doctors do not recommend that she undergo another surgery; the only option to save her life is to Med-Evac her to the US.

As you can imagine, the cost of medical evacuation via air is extremely expensive. We are currently negotiating with three different companies: International SOS, PrivateFly and REVA. We have been quoted between $30,000 - $60,000. We are prepared to do anything we can to seek the best medical care for our mother.

We are availing to our friends and family for any assistance that they are able to provide. As you all know, some medical insurances do not cover overseas medical treatments, not even in the case of an emergency. Medicaid/Medicare, the insurance my mother has, is one that does not provide coverage outside of the US.

The initial hospitalization and surgery costs amounted to over $20,000. We are now looking at a bill of a couple thousand dollars for the care she has been receiving since Wednesday until we are able to secure medical transport to the States. We ask anyone who is able to, to please collaborate with whatever they can: no amount is too small and all donations, prayers and kind words are kindly accepted and greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for all your kindness and may God Bless you and yours.

God Speed.
