Help Wanda recover in Wilmington NC

Donation protected
On September 14, 2018 Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wilmington, NC with winds of 100 mph and terrential rains. Our thoughts are with the families and communities impacted by Hurricane Florence. We know that many people face challenging times ahead as they slowly recover from the storm.

My mother, Wanda, is a 64-year old Wilmington native who has lived through many hurricanes without suffering any major damage. This time was different. This time a storm came through so strong that it tore roofing off her home, collapsed the ceilings and poured rain in to her home over several days. Thankfully, the property did not flood. She was safely evacuated by family members at 9pm on Friday night during a break in the storm and brought to safety.

Wanda is a single woman,  permanently disabled with emphysema and on 24-hour oxygen. Having had emphysema (a progressive lung disease) for the past 17 years, she is now completely homebound. Wanda is also very proud and probably not happy I set up this GoFundMe page. She has never taken a handout from anyone but has always been ready to give you the shirt off her back. Regular homeowners insurance will not cover the damage and she could not afford a Wind and Hail policy on her low income. FEMA has been applied for but it will take months even years to restore her home. My sister and I have pitched in to supplement her low income prior to the hurricane but could not afford to put on a new roof before the storm hit. We know that many families face challenging times ahead as they recover after the storm and that she isn’t the worst one in need. Your support will help with our commitment to do everything we can to ease her stress, support her financial well-being and provide for her essential needs in this difficult time. She needs temporary shelter, food, water, clothing and has life-threatening  medical needs.

All repairs will be out of pocket and from government assistance. The money raised here will be used for essential needs like temporary housing, food, clothing, debris removal and the costs to keep her medical equipment working until government assistance kicks in. Disaster aid does not come door-to-door so able family members have gone out on her behalf to seek immediate aid. The roof of her home is the first thing that needs repair and will likely cost around $8,000-$10,000. FEMA has been applied for but it will take months even years to restore her home. Due to her breathing condition and the fact that it has already taken over a week to have an insurance adjuster safely come out and say she is not covered, the house and everything in it is wet, rotten and molding.

Any amount you can donate will go far to help this proud woman. She worked graveyard shift as a CNA for 20+ years and finally paid off her 30-year mortgage in 2016.

More information about this GoFundMe:

1. Who are you? My name is Willa. I am Wanda’s youngest daughter
2. Where are you from? I was born and raised in Wilmington, in this home, but now live in Upstate SC.
3. What is your relationship to the parties you're raising funds for? Wanda is my mother and the only parent I have ever known. She is my hero.
4. How will the funds be spent (be specific as possible)? Funds raised will go to providing temporary housing for Wanda, replacing items damaged in her home (food, clothes, furniture, electronics), her medical equipment and to start clean up and roof repair immediately needed before any FEMA funds are granted.

Thank you so much for considering and for your encouragement in knowing we will get through this.
